It’s not how she thought it would be.

One, two, three, is how it’s supposed to go.

One, the click, bullets in place. Two, the flash, life before her eyes. Three, the bang.

Goodbye.

But life isn’t simple, so why should death be?

It goes one, two, three, but the numbers are hours not seconds.

One, she breathes fast. One, her eyes move, she looks for an escape. One, he’s ready, he laughs.

She finds herself longing for three.

Two, she waits for the flash. Two, her memory seems to have gone, the past escapes her. Two, she thinks she should scream.

Why won’t he save her?

Three, bang, bang, and metal is flying. Three, her lungs expand, reaching forward, a welcoming party. Three, and her mouth is open. Three, no sound comes out.

She wants to go back, back to one.

Three, and the next thing she sees is light.

It’s not how he thought it would be.

One, two, three, is how it’s supposed to go.

One, the glimpse, her tears through the window. Two, the scream, he kicks down the door. Three, the bang, he knocks the man over.

She’s fine.

But he can’t get it right, he never could.

It goes one, two, three, but the numbers are mixed, he can’t count now.

One, he’s walking, he sees her car. One, where is she? He wonders. One, he walks on.

He pictures her face.

Two, a crash from inside the building. Two, he’s slow as he moves. Two, she’s out of sight when he looks through the glass.

Why won’t she love him?

Three, the bang, two bangs, his head snaps around. Three, and he’s rushing inside. Three, the men run and the gun’s on the floor. Three, it’s her on the ground.

Three, and the next thing he does is cry.
