The Hunger Games

So i read the first book in The Hunger Games series in an impossibly quick time yesterday. I couldn't put it down! So i had to go and see the movie today. Also awesome. They changed a few small things but i thought it was a faithful adaptation. My brother and his fiance loved it as well, though they haven't read the book.

I loved this Arcade Fire ( Read more... )

I've been meaning to buy that series. I don't go to the movies. So in your opinion the books are totally worth it?

Hi honey,
Yes, they are absolutely worth it! I've only read the first book - but let me tell you this - i was so captivated by it that i read all 450 pages yesterday, immediately bought the other 2 for my Kindle, then went to see the film today!

I'm about a fifth of the way through the second book already and it's just as well written and interesting. The writing is excellent, and the dystopia she's created is fascinating.

They are cheap on Kindle at the mo, if you have one. So, yes, definitely, buy it!

Argh! I must see this movie!

The books are young adult fic, right? Does it say whether it is set on earth?

The books are Young Adult, yes, and they are quality YA. The main character is a teenager, and there is a mild romance sub-plot.

It is set on Earth, in a dystopian future in a section of North America. It's less of a sci-fi and more a dystopia. If you're planning on reading them too, i'd recommend reading the first book before you see the movie. The movie is a really faithful adaptation, i believe the author was heavily involved in its creation. But...with a book that great, i think the experience of reading then watching it would give you the most out of it.

But you can easily watch it and understand without knowledge of the books. My brother and fiance asked a couple of questions during the film, but they followed it fine and really liked it.

I think you should read it though!!!

Uh. Changing the race of the lead character is NOT a "small thing". And that is the reason I refuse to give any money to the makers of this movie. Young non-white people don't have enough positive role models in the media as it is, they don't need them taken away and made white!

Um. In the book, the only indication of it is where the author says she has "that seam look", olive skin, dark hair, grey eyes. This is a description i would associate more with someone of Mediterranean descent. Beyond that there are no descriptors of Katniss's race that i can recall. Perhaps they should have sought an actress who was of Mediterranean background?

Certainly, while i was reading it i didn't have a particular racial identity in mind, since the book doesn't seem to operate on those terms.
