Shot shenanigans!

It was a mark of how long she'd been here, probably, that when nobody challenged her at the drinks table. She was almost a little disappointed; she'd wanted to point out that there weren't any rules about these things, and that by her world's standards it was fine ( Read more... )

"Is it?" The question wasn't at all bewildered. Rather, it was accompanied by a quirk of her brow, vaguely suspicious while Pan settled on her shoulder. "Why's that? I'm fairly certain it hasn't got my name on it," said as she ducked her head to get a closer look at said shot glass.

"No, but it's for you," Arya said, waggling the glass as an enticement. "We're going to do shots, and this is a shot glass."

Now, that was much better, the use of "for"; Lyra liked a gift as much as the next girl. "Well, of course it's a shot glass. What are you going to do shots out of? A non-shot glass?" loftily replied as she snatched the glass rather greedily. "... what sort of shots are we doing?"

Pan despaired.

"Tequila," Arya said, bringing up the bottle now that she had something to poor it into. "I think we're meant to have salt as well, or something, but I'm not putting salt into perfectly good liquor."

Well that was that, then. As if Lyra would very well ask for salt when she wasn't even sure what Tequila was. Quite possibly a very stupid mistake on her part, but it was Arya.

... Or at least someone who looked like her. "What are your thoughts on romance?" she asked as she held out her shot glass.

"Turns people stupid," Arya said promptly, tipping tequila into the glass with a steady hand, then doing her own. She held it in front of her face, examining the contents.

It didn't look as powerful as she'd been led to believe. Maybe people just liked to talk it up to make themselves look better.

"If you say so," she grinned, taking a closer look at the amber liquor as she did so. Fair enough.

Why, it almost looked like cider. Lyra wasn't at all intimidated. "Well, all right then. At the same time?" asked as she raised her glass in cheers.

Pan shook his little head and covered his eyes.

That was one of the things she liked about Lyra. She never had to spend needless time explaining things like with so many people.

"Just so," she said, raising her glass and putting it to her lips, pausing to let Lyra do the same. Then she tipped it back.

Her head twitched, almost shook, completely involuntarily. That was unexpected.

Lyra met her eyes over the rim, then threw the liquor down her throat in one great swallow.

Naturally, she coughed and snorted, but no, her eyes were certainly not watering as her daemon swished his tail consolingly across her neck. As soon as she could speak, albeit with a noticeable strain in her voice, Lyra chirped, "s'good stuff. Of course, I've had better."

"M-" Arya began, then coughed, and said, "Me too. It's not very... subtle."

She blinked a little, then held out the bottle in preparation for pouring Lyra another shot.

Her hand was very steady. The hand with the bottle, at least. The one she wasn't concentrating on seemed to have a mind of its own.

Lyra coughed once more, though she did her best to turn this one into a laugh. "Oh, that's it, that's exactly it," she agreed as she licked the burn from her lips. Not very subtle, but still as sharp as a knife going down. "So clever.

Lyra put a stopper in that thought before it could even get started. Even as a flush of heat unfurled like a dull warning in her chest, Lyra let the liquor pour, then clinked her shot glass against Arya's own. "I'll bet I can get it down faster this time," her grin entirely wicked.

Nate was having a great night so far. With all the magically appearing booze and food, it was almost like home. And the booze helped him to forget that he wasn't home.

So when he say two girls about his age, coughing and giggling over a bottle, he decided to go join them.

"You guys look like you're having fun," he said. "Wow, straight tequila." He glanced at the label and noticed that it wasn't exactly top shelf material. "You guys are hardcore."

"Yes," Arya said, nodding solemnly. Obviously, they were.

"...wait, what does that mean?"

Was he making fun of her? She hadn't brought her sword. That was fine, she didn't need it, she could take him.

"Oh, it means doing it really, really hard," Lyra sagely replied. "Without protection. Oh, you know... like on the head..."

She smacked her lips and squinted at the stranger. "Of course, I do everything without armor. So does she."

Pan had abandoned her. When exactly that had happened, Lyra couldn't be sure.

Nate would have explained, but then the blond had to dive in with her explanation that left Nate wide-eyed and scrambling for words.

"Oh," he said slowly, eyebrows arching. "Really?" He could almost see the Chuck-worthy grin start to creep across his face. "Yeah," he said, looking to the brunette. "Basically it means you like it rough."

"Ohhhh," Arya said, nodding. "I always wondered, the band I'm in has hardcore in the name, I never knew. That sounds about right, though."

She paused, then considered the conversation carefully. Her mouth opened a little, then she shut it, before, with equal care, she added, "...don't get any ideas."

Arya had formerly sold shellfish in a brothel. She wasn't entirely deaf to innuendo.
