I'm with you. I actually posted a myspace blog about that a few wks ago. Breaks my heart, what's happening to this city. The mega-corps are moving in, the mom 'n pops are dying. Housing is impossible, more than ever. Met Life is selling the last bastion of middle class affordability, Stuy Town & Peter Cooper Village & it'll turn into more luxury housing that no one but the rich can afford.
In the past 2 yrs in the West Vill we've lost The Bottom Line & CBGBs. Institutions. But we've also lost a lot of places that make a neighborhood, well, a neighborhood. Two supermarkets, our only greengrocer, a bread bakery that'd been there 100 years, a local drug store that'd been there for 34, a shoemaker, a little office supply place, and a neat postcard shop, probably more that I'm forgetting. They get replaced with upscale boutiques, CVS, Duane Reade, restaurants that can't afford the rent & die in a year, fast food chains ... or they stay vacant.
Yeah, breaks my heart for my city. I've seen a lot of change in over 40 years, but not like this. Guys, shop local. If you don't want your every shopping choice made by corp headquarters in Des Moines, start shopping local. Support the neighborhood business' while you still have some left.

And hey, let's all go move into Lonewolf's building, keep him company!
