Academy Awards and such

Feb 21, 2009 23:21

Well just back from the best picture showcase at AMC (all 5 best pic films in the theater with all the gut busting popcorn you can eat for $25). Sadly though only saw 4 of the 5 as seems Slumdog Millionair had some issues (For those who have worked in theaters the core fell out while they were moving the print and they did not catch it as it fell - pile of film all over the booth). So now got a free pass to see it tomorow. Of the ones saw I liked all of them though Milk and Frost/Nixon were Two that really liked (can see why both up for the best actor in those films).

Just because fun below my guesses for the show
Best picture
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
"Frost/Nixon"
"Milk"
"The Reader"
"Slumdog Millionaire" - while not seen it yet have a feeling that will get it as the 'feel good' film it is played to be. Might adjust if see it myself tomorow

Actor
Richard Jenkins, "The Visitor"
Frank Langella, "Frost/Nixon"
Sean Penn, "Milk"  - While seen all but the Visitor this one was a very good performace even if would love to see Rourke win do not think he has the juice
Brad Pitt, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
Mickey Rourke, "The Wrestler"

Actress
Anne Hathaway, "Rachel Getting Married"
Angelina Jolie, "Changeling"
Melissa Leo, "Frozen River"
Meryl Streep, "Doubt"
Kate Winslet, "The Reader" - not seen all the others but enjoyed her in this movie quite a bit.

Supporting actor
Josh Brolin, "Milk"
Robert Downey Jr., "Tropic Thunder"
Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Doubt"
Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight"  - This is one that many say is a sure thing and while many of those listed were good have a feeling the sympathy vote will take this one though the performace was very very good
Michael Shannon, "Revolutionary Road"

Supporting actress
Amy Adams, "Doubt"
Penelope Cruz, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"
Viola Davis, "Doubt" - This is just a gut feeling but always the hardest to call in my oppinion is this catagory
Taraji P. Henson, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
Marisa Tomei, "The Wrestler"

Director
Danny Boyle, "Slumdog Millionaire" - has been the darling of the awards of late and figure they will keep picture and director together
Stephen Daldry, "The Reader"
David Fincher, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
Ron Howard, "Frost/Nixon"
Gus Van Sant, "Milk"

Animated feature
"Bolt"
"Kung Fu Panda"
"WALL-E" - this movie was very impressive with how much was able to show with our socirty in the first 30 or so min and not even have a word spoken

Adapted screenplay
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," screenplay by Eric Roth, screen story by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord
"Doubt," written by John Patrick Shanley
"Frost/Nixon," screenplay by Peter Morgan
"The Reader," screenplay by David Hare
"Slumdog Millionaire," screenplay by Simon Beaufoy - while first impression was Doubt have a feeling the feel good wave will continue here

Original screenplay
"Frozen River," written by Courtney Hunt
"Happy-Go-Lucky," written by Mike Leigh
"In Bruges," written by Martin McDonagh
"Milk," written by Dustin Lance Black - with as much as people talked of how hard was to take the story and make the movie have a feeling will take it, though my 2nd bet would be Wall-e but well the academy will probably give it the best animated and not this one.
"WALL-E," screenplay by Andrew Stanton, Jim Reardon; original story by Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter

Art direction
"Changeling," James J. Murakami; set decoration: Gary Fettis
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Donald Graham Burt; set decoration: Victor J. Zolfo
"The Dark Knight," Nathan Crowley; set decoration: Peter Lando - go with this one as period pieces get alot but to take the modern and give it that small tweek to me seems more impressive.
"The Duchess," Michael Carlin; set decoration: Rebecca Alleway
"Revolutionary Road," Kristi Zea; set decoration: Debra Schutt

Cinematography
"Changeling," Tom Stern
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Claudio Miranda
"The Dark Knight," Wally Pfister -again think that the taking the modern and giving it that more dark side was a greater challenge though think the runner would be Button for its many ages and styles though the years it covers.
"The Reader," Chris Menges and Roger Deakins
"Slumdog Millionaire," Anthony Dod Mantle

Costume design
"Australia," Catherine Martin
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Jacqueline West - Think this one will get due to the so many varired years it covers more than dealing with one period. Though Milk is my 2nd choice for its style of the 70's
"The Duchess," Michael O'Connor
"Milk," Danny Glicker
"Revolutionary Road," Albert Wolsky

Documentary feature - no idea pure guess
"The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)"
"Encounters at the End of the World"
"The Garden"
"Man on Wire"
"Trouble the Water"

Documentary short - no idea as well though this smile pinki is only one heard
"The Conscience of Nhem En"
"The Final Inch"
"Smile Pinki"
"The Witness -- From the Balcony of Room 306"

Film editing
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
"The Dark Knight," Lee Smith
"Frost/Nixon," Mike Hill and Dan Hanley
"Milk," Elliot Graham - give this one due to the use of archive and filmed scenes and how they worked together
"Slumdog Millionaire," Chris Dickens

Foreign language film - another guess but the French should win something some times right
"The Baader Meinhof Complex," Germany
"The Class," France
"Departures," Japan
"Revanche," Austria
"Waltz with Bashir," Israel

Makeup
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Greg Cannom
"The Dark Knight," John Caglione Jr. and Conor O'Sullivan - have to go for the Dark knight over button as button was more CG than physical make up in what they did. though hellboy was very good in that as well
"Hellboy II: The Golden Army," Mike Elizalde and Thom Floutz

Original score
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Alexandre Desplat
"Defiance," James Newton Howard
"Milk," Danny Elfman
"Slumdog Millionaire," A.R. Rahman
"WALL-E," Thomas Newman - think this will get it as when you do not have as many voices to tell the story the score comes out much more as a character and think that some of the magic of this would be lost without it

Original song
"Down to Earth" from "WALL-E," music by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman, lyrics by Peter Gabriel
"Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire," music by A.R. Rahman, lyrics by Gulzar
"O Saya" from "Slumdog Millionaire," music and lyrics by A.R. Rahman and Maya Arulpragasam

Animated short
"La Maison en Petits Cubes"
"Lavatory -- Lovestory"
"Oktapodi"
"Presto"
"This Way Up"

Live-action short
"Auf der Strecke (On the Line)"
"Manon on the Asphalt"
"New Boy"
"The Pig"
"Spielzeugland"

Sound editing
"The Dark Knight," Richard King
"Iron Man," Frank Eulner and Christopher Boyes
"Slumdog Millionaire," Glenn Freemantle and Tom Sayers
"WALL-E," Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood
"Wanted," Wylie Stateman

Sound mixing
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," David Parker, Michael Semanick, Ren Klyce and Mark Weingarten
"The Dark Knight," Lora Hirschberg, Gary Rizzo and Ed Novick
"Slumdog Millionaire," Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke and Resul Pookutty
"WALL-E," Tom Myers, Michael Semanick and Ben Burtt - the sounds were to me one of the big players in this film
"Wanted," Chris Jenkins, Frank A. Montaño and Petr Forejt
Visual effects
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Eric Barba, Steve Preeg, Burt Dalton and Craig Barron - this one since it was more CG than make up to get the effects for Pitt
"The Dark Knight," Nick Davis, Chris Corbould, Tim Webber and Paul Franklin
"Iron Man," John Nelson, Ben Snow, Dan Sudick and Shane Mahanype your cut contents here.

Well there my picks, out thre and all with most of my reasons
