A while back I was doing a pitch for an anniversary ad campaign of sorts to a client. And at some point the conversation extended up to mismanagement resulting to cutting of jobs. And I believe it came to something like: "If we mismanage, we cut off their jobs." And partly it came into blaming whom for such a mistake and there was some jokes and laughter tossed around.
But we failed to notice that their janitor was actually around that time, cleaning.
I hope we didn't come off distasteful and heartlessly apathetic. As it shouldn't come off that way. The laugh and jokes were just off-timing then.
Now, I understand business. It gets dirty - tough calls needs a cold heart for a logical position so you can survive. These things are needed, no matter how harsh or unfair they are seemingly at times (if not most times). Business is business.
And from that event, I start to realize how punishing could that be for them who earns just too little. Losing a thread-length a lifeline due to failed calls. It's a realization for me. So, when I finally get to manage people under my own company, I hope to make the best decisions. Make informed judgment calls - or at least the best one since even informed ones fail. These people have lives that depend on you to make those judgment calls work.
I'm aware that even the brightest of all economists fault - take Allan Greenspan for example. On my level, I am aware that I will make mistakes in business. But for most part, minimize the potential collateral damages to such mistakes. AND most importantly - do away with corrupt practices or any practice that puts these people's lifeline on the edge because of solitary yet insatiable greed.
I'm still a 'business is business' type of person. If I have to make these calls, I would. But everything must be done to avoid those hard calls.
When running my own official business, I should not forget that while rowing the boat out of a storm at sea, there could be already people drowning. While I need to survive, so does the others who are working for me.
