Snagged this from dime_for_12. The instructions were 1) write down the first line of your latest 25 fics, and 2) try to find a pattern.
These aren't really in any particular order (mostly because I realized I had several fics I wanted to include that are unfinished and/or unposted). I'm telling you where they're from simply because I want to -- I don't want anyone who ganks this from me to feel obligated to do likewise. (And I mention the fandom so you can find them easier using the tags if you want to. Fwiw.)
Anyway, onto the lines:
1. At first, it’s like light coming through fog.
(SN; from "A Matter of Choice")
2. Sam had almost wanted to play along, to take advantage of the opportunity, to forget for a while about Michael and Lucifer and the Apocalypse and instead just catch up on the boyhood he’d missed.
(SN; from "Face Mask")
3. “I can’t,” George nearly moaned.
(BH; from "Morphology", the ftm!George fic.)
4. She cared more for her coworkers than for the job itself, she knew that.
(DB; from the as-yet-untitled mtf!Dean WIP.)
5. Peter had been with the Bank Robbery Task Force, before.
(WC; from "He Who Fights Monsters")
6. Most days, Neal takes it as a compliment.
(WC; from the mtf!Neal fic.)
7. He was getting on his bike, leaving work for the night, when his cell phone rang.
(Mental; from "An Echo Half-Heard")
8. In some ways, he reflects, the universe is rather a lot like humanity.
(Numb3rs; from "Singularities")
9. When Al arrives, Sam is looking in the mirror, staring at the face he’s wearing.
(QL; from "A Memory of the Smell of Smoke" -- technically the quote is the first line, but meh.)
10. “I think I have to stay here, for now,” says Daniel, and he sounds determined.
(Listener; from "Away from Home")
11. He’s told Ray of the bits and pieces of his history - his mother, his brother, his gift - that have been slowly but surely coming back.
(Listener; from "Reflections in a Broken Mirror")
12. The man was all but lying on the sidewalk when they reached him.
(Listener; from "Secondhand")
13. The hospital food and television were terrible.
(FP; from "The More Things Change")
14. Sam stared at him for what felt like a long time.
(FP; from "Shades of Grey")
15. Sam had always known he was going to be a policeman.
(FP; from "Fire All of Your Guns at Once")
16. He’d stuff the pillow case in the back of the neck of his shirt and suddenly, cape trailing down his back, he was Superman.
(FP; from "Taking Flight")
17. Sam hadn’t been following in his dad’s footsteps when he went into the army - or if he had, he’d had decidedly different reasons.
(FP; from "Don't Ask, Don't Tell")
18. It’s Castiel.
(SN; from "Merry Meet")
19. Rick Castle walked by his daughter’s room to see her propped up on her bed with a book in her lap.
(Castle; from "The Twilight of Our Discontent")
20. “He listens to you,” she’d said.
(DB; this is the intended first line of NCT. Unposted.)
21. Dexter disliked the Manhattanization of Miami most days, but particularly today.
(Dexter; from a WIP in which Dexter gets stuck in an elevator with the Devil. Unposted.)
22. As a spy, you have to get used to being in all sorts of different situations.
(BN; from the Michael-Westen-as-a-camp-counselor WIP I wrote for JuNo. Unposted.)
23. Their relationship had been safe.
(FP; from "Security")
24. The worst thing about dying had been all the living she had thought she wasn’t going to get to do.
(DLM; from an as-yet-untitled but relatively epic ftm!George fic. Unposted, but I really should finish this and post it -- it's become my personal canon. <3)
25. It was a coincidence that he even found out.
(NCIS/Castle; from "First Draft", which I wrote for comment_fic and could have sworn I posted but haven't.)
Patterns?
1. I write long sentences. But we knew that already. ;)
2. It's extremely rare for me to refer to a POV character by name in the first sentence.
3. It's even more rare for me to start a story with dialogue.
I'm curious whether patterns like these have anything to do with the format of the stories. For instance, I wouldn't be shocked if 2 and 3 were influenced by the fact that I consistently write drabbles. *shrug* Interesting to consider, anyway, I think.
