Read my last entry if you haven't!
I just got done writing a review on this article for AP Politics and Government (a class, if I may be allowed to brag, in which I am studying the same stuff that my brother is in his sophmore year of college.) The article is here. Please skim through it before continuing:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/usnw/20051007/pl_usnw/dean_calls_on_bush_to_condemn_attacks_on_immigrants_and_to_stand_up_to_anti_immigrant_extremists_in_his_own_party144_xml Done? Good. For me, that was a long, painful article (for my fists and my head in both ways.) Let me copy and paste my review...
Let me make it clear that I personally will condemn the violence of American citizens. Killing hapless victims is wrong. However, that is all I agree with in this article. First, let me address the attackers. It is obvious that they are angry because they are feeling the effects of illegal immigration in job losses and/or higher taxes (to pay for their benefits.) I don’t agree with their employment of violence, but I do agree that they’re running out of other options. Both President Bush and Congress have dropped the ball on this and continue to ignore the problem despite public concern (yes, I just expressed disappointment with Bush.) It is ignoring public good and the law. As for the illegal-immigrants, they are not blameless. They are violating US law by being here and they can’t open bank accounts because they are breaking the law. They wouldn't get discriminated against if they followed the law! Laws are for the most part put in place to protcet people, this is a great example!
To Mr. Dean, I assert that 8-11 million illegal immigrants living in the shadows is NOT unconscionable. The fact that there are 8-11 million (just that we know about,) the fact that the US government is allowing illegal immigration to continue, the fact that it knows about 8-11 million and is doing nothing about them, and the fact that you’re condoning all of this, now THAT is unconscionable! The fact that we could have hundreds or millions of al-Qaida members (or other terrorist orginization's members) just walking into our country unchecked, that's not even unconcionable, that's unfathomable and even to me, quite scary. They are not receiving aid in Katrina's aftermath because they pay no taxes! Furthermore, even if we wanted to give them aid, we couldn’t because they don’t register! Yet, they can't complain because they still recieve public goods, medicare, medicaid, and other benefits which as which as non-US citizens, they are not entitled to. As for the fear mongers, fear is something that will motivate government change and we sure could use that, but that is not what they are doing. Being the most conservative and Republican supportive person that most of you know, I will speak for all Republicans in saying that Republicans aren’t anti-immigration, just anti-illegal immigration. The Minutemen are an interest group supporting increased attention to our borders and are doing a very patriotic thing, assisting the under-supported federally backed Border Patrol. So if you object to that, why not just open the borders and put a mat out that says, "Welcome, no reservations required!" They are taking action for what they believe just as moveon.org (among others) is supporting the idiocy that they believe in. Drawing attention to a matter of national and economical security is something that I believe should not be denounced. I would be down there myself if I could be.
Personally, I am all for immigration, it is one of the things that makes this country great, but do it legally. It is one of the biggest threats to our national security and our economy to have anyone walk across the border and get a job. Something needs to be done now to end this.
On a minor note, Hispanic History Month, what the hell. We've got black history month (nationally advertised in schools and such) and now hispanic history month. GAH! Another example of how minorities are reversing Democracy and ruling America! Tell me when is White or European History month? What? There is none you say? Minorities get history months but the majority can't have one? Ok....yet at the same time black history month is played up more than national reading month! GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a rather short entry considering my passion for the topic. Any critiques I will counter and if I remember something to add, it will be added.
