2LT Harris,
I keep forgetting to mention this to you when I see you, so I’ll just e mail you:
Your work doing the Sapper training was much appreciated. I know that was a lot of effort on your part and something that no one, by any stretch of the imagination, was expecting you to do.
Those that stuck with you certainly benefited from your hard work; you have made each of them a better cadet. I am sure that you will reap the benefits of the training, too.

LTC Ligo is our Professor of Military Science, he's my mentor and has really developed who I am an individual now, and who I will be as an officer. Speaking to him also made me decide to branch Corps of Engineers and go to Ranger school. We speak a lot, yesterday I spent about an hour and a half in his office just talking with him. He's like a second father to me, he's a great man, officer and mentor. So, this email meant a lot to me. Here is my response:
LTC Ligo,
Thank you, sir. I'm sure you've noticed, but I think highly of you and see you as a mentor, so your words mean a lot to me. I never felt any obligation or expectation for me to do what I did with the Sappers. I did it because I saw a need in the Battalion and wanted to give our cadets a chance; I also saw it as a good chance to develop my training ability and to learn about some engineer operations. I appreciate the latitude you gave me in developing the training, giving us PT time and also letting us kind of freelance during the JFTX. I think I learned a lot more that way than if someone had been standing over my shoulder.
