“Jin, please. I really regretted breaking up with you. I want you back.”
“Kazu, I told you, you should never leave. Cause if you left, you’d be miserable. Guess Pi doesn’t do it like I do, or else you wouldn’t be running back to me, since you were the one who wanted out. But now, I’m sorry. Even though I still love you, I can’t take you back.”
“Why? You just said it. You still love me. So why can’t you give me another chance?” Kame was beginning to break down.
“Because my heart won’t let me,” Jin was also crying. He couldn’t help it. Kamenashi Kazuya, his girlfriend for the past 10 years, broke up with him, Akanishi Jin, for his best friend Yamashita Tomohisa. And now, she wants to patch things up with him.
-FLASHBACK-
“Jin?”
“Yes baby?”
“Let’s break-up.”
Jin, who was reading a magazine on the couch in their shared apartment, looked up in shock.
“You’re joking right?”
“Jin, I’m serious about this. I want a break-up,” Kame’s voice was determined.
“Why? Is it me? Did I do something wrong? What is it that I did? What do you not like about me? I can change,” asked Jin. He didn’t want to break up with his Kazu. Not the love of his life. Even though he never showed it verbally, Jin always showered Kame with all the love, care and concern he can possibly give her. So why did she want to break-up with him?
“It’s not about you. This is about me, about what I want. I don’t see myself having a family with you Jin. Plus, I fell for someone else.”
“Who is it?” Jin could almost guess who it was though. The way his best friend acted around him recently was unusual. He was much closer to Kame, and always acted weird in front of Jin.
“I fell for Yamapi. I’m sorry Jin. I really am.”
“I thought so. I sensed that something was wrong. But I guess it can only be my fault that I chose to ignore it.”
“Jin, I really-“
“Look, Kazu. Go to him. If you really think that Pi can bring you the happiness you want, then go. Just don’t regret your decisions in the future,” said Jin in a broken voice, “But I’d say you’ll feel miserable. I’ve known Pi all my life. He isn’t like me.”
“Jin, I’m sorry. I really am. I just hope you won’t hate me.”
Smiling a bitter smile, Jin said, “Kazu, I could never hate you. You, for one, should know that by now. Just go, but don’t come back if you really leave. I won’t be able to handle it.”
“I won’t regret this. I’m sorry. And thank you for these 10 years. I had many memories with you.”
20 minutes later, Kame had all her belongings packed, and she moved out of their apartment, into a new one, and the warmth of Yamapi instead.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“You have no idea how difficult it was for me to get my life back on track again. You have no idea..” sobbed Jin. After Kame left him for Yamapi, life was hell.
“Jin-“
“If Ryo and Tat-chan wasn’t there for me, I’d be lying dead in some corner of the apartment now.”
-FLASHBACK-
(2 weeks after the break up)
Loud banging could be heard from the front of Jin’s apartment, causing a commotion at 8 am in the morning and successfully waking up the neighbors. The owner of the apartment, namely Jin, was curled up on the couch, trying his best to drown out the noises that came from outside the apartment by covering his ears with the cushions.
“WHO IS THAT MAKING SO MUCH NOISE AT SUCH A HOUR. WE NEED OUR SLEEP YOU BASTARD!”
“AKANISHI JIN! You get your fucking ass to the door and open up now before I call the blasted cops to bang the door down!” shouted Nishikido Ryo, the Sexy Osakan man, and also, Jin’s other best friend.
“Ryo! Please! Calm down! The neighbors will hear you!” Ueda was trying to calm her fuming lover down. It wasn’t a good sign when Ryo was mad.
“Jin, I know you’re in there. I can smell your rotting form lying on the couch! Get your ass to the door damn it!”
“OI! WHOEVER IS OUTSIDE SCREAMING LIKE A MAD DOG! KEEP THE VOLUME DOWN WILL YOU!”
“Whether I keep my volume down or not is MY BUSINESS YOU FAGGOT.”
“Ryo! He has his spare keys somewhere. Kame-chan said something about it being under here - pause - THERE! I found it!”
A loud ‘CLICK’ could be heard and the door swung open with brute force, revealing a fuming Ryo and a calm Ueda. Moving over towards the curled up form of Jin, Ryo grabbed him roughly by the collar and started shaking, hard.
“Akanishi Jin! Do you know how worried we were about you?! You didn’t show up for work! Your cellphone is off! You never pick up the house phone! What the hell has gotten into you?” Not only was Ryo angry, he felt worried and afraid. Afraid that his best friend would do something stupid.
“She’s gone Ryo. She really left me. She left me for Pi. How do you expect me to show up for work, knowing that I’ll definitely see the both of them, being all lovey-dovey in front of me, and knowing that the person she has in her eyes now isn’t me. Am I not good enough for her? Where did I go wrong?” asked Jin, voice husky and rough due to the lack of fluids in his body. He hasn’t eaten or drank anything for almost 2 weeks, since the day Kame left. How he managed to survive was a miracle.
“Jin, doing this to you isn’t going to get her back,” reasoned Ueda, “you’ll only make Kame feel guilty. But that’s all she would ever feel. Things won’t go back to the way it was before.”
“Tat-chan, you’re her best friend. You should know what she’s thinking. Is it me? Did I do anything wrong? I can change. Just tell me and I will change. Please. Tell me why. Why Pi?”
“Jin, I haven’t talked to her since Ryo barged into their apartment 1 week ago. I really don’t know what she has in mind now. I’m sorry.”
“She left. She wanted out. 10 years. Doesn’t it mean anything to her at all?” Jin’s voice was getting weaker, faltering as he rambled on incoherently. It seemed like the lack of food and water was beginning to take a toll on him.
“Jin? Jin! Don’t scare me. Jin?!” shouted Ryo frantically when he realized that his best friend was slipping in and out of conscious. The last thing Jin heard before blacking out completely was a worried shout to Ueda to call up an ambulance, and then everything went pitch dark. When he woke up hours later, Jin found himself in an unfamiliar environment, with Ryo sleeping on the couch at the far end of the room, Ueda resting her head on his shoulder. Looking around carefully, Jin realized that he was in the hospital.
“How did I get here?” Jin questioned himself, “I remember Ryo barging into the apartment with Tat-chan and the both of them scolding me but then everything went dark after that.”
As if on auto, Ryo woke up suddenly, and saw that Jin was awake.
“Jin!” shouted Ryo, immediately waking Ueda up from her light slumber. The both of them rushed to his side and started muttering things like “Thank god”, “He’s alright” and “Thank you.”
“You almost gave me a heart attack!” scolded Ueda, who was close to tears, relieved that Jin was finally awake.
“Bastard. Don’t you dare pull such a stunt on us like that! Do you know how worried we were? Passing out on me in that manner?!” Ryo himself was trying not to cry out himself. He couldn’t help but to worry, worry that Jin wouldn’t wake up.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to,” mumbled Jin. Now he was feeling guilty. Guilty that he constantly worried his friends, and guilty that he didn’t realize how much they cared.
“Bakanishi. Do that to me one more time and I’m going to kick your ass,” growled Ryo half-heartedly.
“Ryo. This is the hospital. Watch your words,” warned Ueda. Sensing that Jin wanted to say something to Ryo in private, Ueda politely excused herself, “I’ll go get the doctor.”
“Thank you Tat-chan,” smiled Jin weakly.
“Ii yo. Daijoubu. Just make sure you get well quickly ne?” smiled Ueda in reply before she left the ward.
“Ryo, you didn’t do anything rash to Pi did you?” asked Jin.
“Maa, if you don’t count punching him in the gut, giving him a broken lip and a swollen eye as something rash. Then no, I didn’t,” replied Ryo calmly.
“Oh god, please tell me you didn’t do that.”
“I did. And he didn’t retaliate. Not that I expected him to,” said Ryo, “he doesn’t have the rights to anyway.”
“You didn’t do anything to Kazu did you?” asked Jin, panic evident in his voice.
“As much as I wanted to slap her for causing you such hurt, no. I didn’t. Because if I did, not only would Hime murder me, I wouldn’t live to see the daylights of the next day if you knew.”
“Thank god. Thank god she’s fine.”
“You should say that about yourself too. Stop torturing your body like that. You look like shit. Seriously.”
“It’s hard, knowing she’s in the arms of my best friend. And the worse thing about this is that I still love her a lot. I just don’t know how to deal with it.”
“Just let go. You don’t have to forget. Those memories can be kept. Just let go of the upsetting things. It would be better. I promise.”
“I’ll try. And Ryo, I’m sorry for worrying you.”
“You should. You have no idea how scared Hime and I were of losing you,” said Ryo, moving closer to hug Jin.
“I’ll be stronger. For myself. I promise,” said Jin as Ryo released him from the hug. “Yakusoku.”
Just then, the doctor breezed into the ward with Ueda in tow. Jin had to be hospitalized for the next 2 days for observational purposes. After that, he was discharged. For the next 2 months prior to the hospitalization, Ryo and Ueda could be seen around Jin, helping him, keeping him from harboring thoughts about the break-up, teaching him how to deal with his heart ache. They were there to give him the encouragement that he needed, so he could go back to work again. And they were there to help him get his life back on track again.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“But then you had to start appearing back in my life again. Every single thing I did to try and distance myself from you and from Pi. All that I built around myself for the past half a year, the wall I had around my heart. You had to go and break it down. Why?”
“Jin, I’m sorry. We can always start over. Right?” said Kame, tears decorating her pretty face.
“It’s impossible Kazu. Things will never be the same again. There’s no way we can go back to the way we were in the past.”
“But-“
“Why Kazu. Why did you have to turn back and look at me? You said you could see a future with Pi, so why turn back and regret now?”
-FLASHBACK-
(5 months after the break-up)
Jin was sitting on the couch, strumming a random tune on his guitar. He needed to come up with a song soon, but he had no muse about how to start. Because he couldn’t bear seeing either Kame or Pi, he resigned from his previous company and joined Johnny’s Music Company instead, working now as a composer. Suddenly, his cellphone rang.
Picking up the call, Jin went, “Moshi moshi?”
“Jin? Are you free to talk?” came a familiar voice, one that he hasn’t heard for a long time now.
“Kazu? Is that you?”
“Un. Sorry to interrupt. Sounds like you aren’t free ne?”
“No, it’s fine. How are things between you and Pi?”
A pause could be heard, before a fake a cheery reply of “Everything is just fine” could be heard.
“Souka.”
“How about you? It’s been 5 months since I last saw you. How are you?”
“I’m fine. Thanks for your concern.”
“You resigned. Where’re you working at now?”
“I’m working at Johnny’s now. The music company? I’m a composer.”
A pause..
“Does he treat you right? He didn’t do anything to you did he?”
“Yamapi? No, he treats me nicely.”
“Oh. Good to hear about it.”
An awkward silence ensued.
“Jin, could you come out for a while? And meet me at the park we used to frequent?”
“Hn? Now?”
“Yes. Please?”
A hesitant pause..
“Okay. I’ll see you in 10 minutes.”
Jin thought this would only be a one-time kind of thing. But he was surprised when he received a call from Kame 2 days later, requesting exactly the same thing, to meet at the park they used to frequent. And the calls just kept coming after that.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“I thought it would be a one-time thing. To catch up with an old friend or something. But you just kept calling after that. Why?”
“Jin, I-“
“There’s no reason your name should come up on my cell, unless you’re unhappy. But that shouldn’t be the case cause you said he was the one.”
“He’s not like you Jin! He’s nothing like you! The way he looks at me, the way he smiles, laughs, talks and touch me! It doesn’t feel right!”
“I told you Kazu, that if you left, you weren’t supposed to regret.”
“The way he holds me, it feels so wrong. The way he takes things when he makes love to me, I don’t have the feeling that I have when I’m doing it with you. It’s just wrong!” Kame was on the verge of losing it. She needed Jin back by her side again. But there was no way it would happen, she could clearly see that now.
“Even so, I’m sorry,” said Jin as he moved closer to hug Kame, tears sliding down his cheeks continuously, “I can’t take you back. You chose this road, so you gotta go it alone. I’m sorry.”
Letting her go, Jin walked away from Kame, leaving her to fall onto the ground, at the very park they used to go. It was the very place where they had first met, where it all started. It was a place filled with memories of their firsts. Their confessions, their first date, their first hug, their first kiss, their first Valentine’s Day, their first White Day, their first year anniversary, their first Christmas and also, their first New Year. All the memories created at this spot came rushing back into Kame’s head, causing her to break down even harder.
“Jin, I’m sorry I was a fool. I didn’t realize that you were my one true love. I’m sorry I left. But it’s all too late now. Cause you will never be able to take me back,” wept Kame, as she sat sobbing and clutching onto the hems of her dress.
Somewhere down the street, 2 blocks away from the park, a man around the age of 26 could be seen leaning against a wall, crying silently to himself.
“Kazu, I’m sorry. Sorry my heart wouldn’t allow you back in.”
Smiling bitterly, he started singing, “I hate to say it but I told you so, told you if you left that you were gonna be miserable. Guess he don’t do it like me, or else you wouldn’t be, running back to the past it was you that left me. I hate to say it but you know I’m right, every time you’re up you’re calling for me late at night. But now that you ain’t got me, tell me where you gonna be. Cause I can’t take you back, no my heart won’t let me.”
After he finished singing, he straightened himself, wiped away his tears, and walked off. But not before a whispered, “I still love you Kamenashi Kazuya. I always did.” could be heard.
A/N: There. It's done. Sorry. i suck at angst. Comment after reading though. Please and thank you. Merry Christmas.
