The Recent LJ Drama, i have an opinion too of course

Jun 02, 2007 14:55

Because i belong to the livejournal community AND i have an opinion on the recent problems LJ has been going through, i figured i wouldn't really be myself unless i shared this opinion with you. This opinion is not meant to attack those with other opinions than this, and i realize i'm in a different boat than anyone who's account was suspended, cuz mine was not, at least not to my knowledge.

but i think LJ is doing the right thing, and they are probably so overstressed. i dont know everything about the root that grew this particular issue to size, but there is a major problem with trolls and spammers on this crazy interweb. If your computer is slow, chances are you got yourself a bug off myspace or email or aim or something.
i feel like, if i am going to pay for my blog like i do on lj, i want LJ to do everything possible to keep me and my computer safe.

I'm sure if i had woken up the other day to see my account was cancelled, i would have been unthrilled. and in fact, when first reading about the whole thing, i thought "wow, thats really fucked up, LJ!"
and in fact, for people who lost their paid accounts, i do hope that lj will do something like give those effected and in the accused possition, who turned out not to be trolls or spammers or major law violators, paid account privilages for 6 months to a year or something for free.

i dunno. LJ has grown so huge in the last few years and the comfort of nerdity we long time computer addicts have been used to, is no longer there. Other people caught on to this technology trend and there are many more people hooked up to the net who are scammers, liars, cheaters, sociopaths, rapists, killers, stalkers, etc.
anyway, if i pay for a journal, i want my blog providers to be doing what they can to keep me safe and get rid of the trolls.

please don't confuse this with war politics. no one is losing their life over this. i mean, i know for myself LJ is sometimes my ONLY connection to life, so having it pulled has to sting a little, and it is a political issue that raises questions about "what is free speech?" and why is it okay for web sites to try to control speech? i believe in free speech very much and i don't think a web site SHOULD be able to take that away... but there is a difference between being free to talk about your life and your opinions and politics, and lying to make people believe you are nice and then hacking into their computers and stealing passwords or spreading viruses just cuz you can. i mean, if you just payed a shitload of money for your computer, and someone posts something on their blog with a link, and you think they are a blogger/lj friend and then next thing u know your computer wont work and all your programs are fucked up and its cuz you clicked on the link which was a troller or spammer all along, are you saying that the troll has a human right to put that link up and shut down the computers of everyone who mistakes them as a decent person?
No. that's not a human right. that's not freedom of speech.
yet with so many corperations TRICKing people into clicking to get you to their page, in this capitalistic world (i know my country is worst of all), i'm glad livejournal took the risk they did.
i love the internet. it is a lifesaver, especially for people who have been outcasts in the world their whole life.
but for people who were effected and are still pissed, i do understand. i just think it was something LJ needed to do, and i think they knew that they'd end up pissing people off and hurting people's feelings. And it was probably a tough decision. So i encourage my LJ pals who are stressed out by this drama, to make peace with LJ. i'm not forcing you, just encouraging.
pass the peace pipe.
