Spike and I had just gotten home from the movies. He actually let me pick which movie I wanted to see. Which was totally weird because he always wanted to go for the action type and I never got to see any sort of drama ever. I knew deep down that he loved the romantic comedies and chick flicks even though he cringed whenever I asked to see one. Since it was the weekend of my birthday Dawn set it up so Spike and I would have the house for the whole weekend to ourselves. Of course we had to still go out patrolling but it was nice to be alone, in my own house. His crypt wasn't exactly the cozy comfy type.

We were going out for patrol but I wanted to change first. I know what happens when you go out to slay with a brand new skirt. It always gets torn or at the very least stained and there goes eighty bucks down the toilet. Spike took the keys and unlocked the door for us. I walked inside and he followed behind me. I heard the keys clank on the end table by the entryway.

I turned to Spike and wrapped my arms around his neck. "I'll be right back." I kissed him nice and slow giving him a little taste of what was to come later. When I let him go his eyes were gleaming. "Change. Patrol. Come back here right after." He nodded at me and I grinned at him. I think that he'd be happy just to stay here and forget about patrolling. So would I actually. But I don't get a night off, that's just the way of things.

As soon as I got to the top of the stairs the phone started to ring. "Gah, can't a girl get a break," I said to myself before calling down the stairs. "Spike! Can you get that?" I peeked down the stairs at him. He saw me and said, "Sure thing, luv. Hurry on, get changed."

I went to my room and opened up my closet. I thumbed threw several things. I wanted to look hot for Spike but it had to be something practical for slaying and something that I didn't care if it got messed up. That limited my choices by a lot. I finally settled on a pair of brown leather pants that fit perfectly but I had gotten them about six months ago. They still had the hotness factor but they weren't brand new so I could go out in them and not worry too much about getting them messed up.

Then I grabbed a plain white tank top and a fitted light brown corduroy jacket. I went to my weapons chest and grabbed two stakes, one at the back of my pants and the other in my inside jacket pocket. I grabbed a small flail and an ax for Spike if he wanted it. The ax would probably get left behind since he usually liked to go weaponless.

I walked down the stairs as Spike was just then hanging up the phone. I managed to see his face before he saw me. He looked like someone had just stolen his puppy or at the very least all of his kittens for kitten poker. "Spike? I'm ready."

He obviously didn't want me to see his face like he had it a few seconds before. "Let's go git them bads, eh?" He started to walk towards the front door.

"Hold up, who was just on the phone?" I put my hand on his arm, making him turn around.

"Just some wanker tryin' to sell ya windows. Didn't wanta take no fer an answer." He had his disgusted look on his face. It was fake though. I knew he was trying to cover something up.

I let him go and put my hands on my hips. "Okay, now, tell me who was really on the phone. Because when I saw you when I came down the stairs it looked like someone had died."

His eyes flashed for a second before he smiled at me. "Yeah, the git on the tele was about to die because I was gonna shove my big bad fist threw it and hit him in the face. Now, come on, we got rough and tumble to do slayer."

He didn't have the pissed offy face on when he was on the phone he had the sad puppy dog look. He had the look on his face that he had whenever I used to turn him down or make fun of him. I didn't move to go out the door. He grabbed me around the waist and his lips were on mine before I could think. He was desperately kissing me like he couldn't get enough of me, almost like he was never going to be able to kiss me again. I couldn't help but hang on and kiss him right back.

When the kiss ended I don't think I could even tell you my name. I probably had the stupidest look on my face. He just grinned at me. "C'mon luv, we got work to do."

"Work?" I asked stupidly.

He snorted and said, "Yeah, slayin' unless you rather just stay here?"

I got enough wits to shake my head. "Oh, yeah, slaying. Let's go."

He just laughed a little behind me before opening the door. "Shut up" I told him before going down the steps. I didn't notice at the time that he didn't lock the front door.

We walked to the cemetery. He held my hand, which was strange, because he never usually did that. I didn't say anything at the time because it was kinda nice, him wanting to be close to me.

We spent a few hours killing random vampires. Nothing really big came out at us. As we were getting ready to go home he grabbed me and was holding me really tight. "Spike! You're hurting me!"

He loosened his grip a little. "Sorry, luv. I just got somethin I needta tell you."

"We're almost home. Can't you tell me there? 'Cause you're kinda scaring me." I held onto his arms but he had me lifted up off the ground.

"No, I gotta tell you now. Just keep yer arms 'round me fer a minute."

Okay, what in the hell was going on? First, the phone call that was obviously not about some guy selling windows. Now, he didn't want to go home for sex? He had to tell me something. I relaxed in his arms and put my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck with my head on his shoulder. He wasn't gonna let me go so I thought that I might as well just give in. After a few minutes of him holding me like that I said, "Okay, what did you want to tell me?"

He sat down on the ground with me on his lap, not letting go. "Buffy." Woah, something was seriously up if he actually called me by my first name.

"Yes... William?" I grinned a little.

He closed his eyes before opening them and staring into mine. "I'm tryin' to be serious here."

I nodded and tried to not smile as much as I could but it was getting hard. I cleared my throat. "Okay. What is it?"

"Y'know I luv you right? I'd do anythin' for ya?" His voice was low, obviously he really was trying to be serious.

I nodded at him. "Of course I know. I love you too."

He shook his head. "It's good of you to say so luv, but I know you don't truly mean it."

He tried to move away from me. "What? Spike?" I held on. "What do you mean?"

"There's not a way that you could luv me as much as I luv you slayer. Someday you'll see." He got up and started to walk again. "Sooner then you think" He said under his breath but I caught it.

"Spike! What do you mean? What is all of this about?" I raced after him since he was already a good fifteen feet away.

"N'ver mind." Then he smiled at me. The most sad smile I had ever seen. I took hold of his hand and pulled him to me. I kissed him with all the love I felt for him. After the kiss was over he turned away. He wiped his face like he had been crying. If he wouldn't tell me what was wrong I couldn't make him.

We walked back to the house in silence, hand in hand. There was a strange black car in the driveway. "Who's car is that?" I asked Spike.

"Let's go and see luv." Somehow I knew that he knew who it was already, just like I knew that he didn't lock the door.
