So I got around to watching The Punisher. I wasn't expecting much and I surprised myself by how much I wound up really enjoying it. After all the superpowers, capes and talk of other worlds, it was refreshing to instead have a purely human tale.
And on a shallow note, I did appreciate that they had managed to assemble a very aesthetically pleasing cast. Who, on the whole, were also very likeable, who got me attached to the characters I was supposed to be attached to and going 'Booo!' to those I wasn't. So all in all, thumbs up.
That said. I'm afraid I still can't warm to Karen. But she definitely fits in better in this show than the others. I'm glad they didn't overly push a romantic storyline, though I'm assuming we will go there in the future. And when that does happen, I won't complain, they genuinely do seem a decent match.
And many years late, I finally get the Ben Barnes thing. After spending a couple of eps squinting and wondering if I'd seen Russo before, the penny finally dropped. At which point I just had enough time to hope they hadn't gone for the 'casting the Brit as the villain' cliche before he was unveiled as the villain. It was like Loki all over again, as my never having read the comics meant I genuinely had no clue how much of an archnemesis Russo/Jigsaw is/will be. Ah well. On the plus side, Barnes and Bernthal have a good chemistry, so hopefully it will be interesting times when their two characters meet again.
I've also had a recent cinema flurry. God's Own Country - EXCELLENT - left my heart overfull with chilled, rural feels, and a envy of their knitwear. Also Death of Stalin. Also excellent. Funny, dark, and a little bit scary given how it's based on history. Then on to Thor Ragnarok, which I adored. A fitting close to the Odinsons' trilogy. All hail Waititi. And finally Paddington 2. Daft, silly, adorable, and lovely. I went to see it with the parents, the padre and I wearing our 'Todos somos Peru' scarves. The family of the LB was well pleased, if there had been less people around there may have been some proud scarf waving :)
