Arrrrg People!

Something that has been coming up lately in my conversations has been people's complete lack of any knowledge of Starship Troopers outside of that bloody awful movie. The few I have run into who have actually read the novel get way to wrapped up in the politics. No it's not a frakking promotion of fascism. Get your definitions right people! Just because a government is militaristic does not mean it's fascist. It would have to be an ultra-national right wing government evoking images of a lost golden age that can be returned to. Add on discrimination against those they feel destroyed that golden age and then you have fascism. The government in Starship Troopers the novel is in no frakking way fascist.
The book isn't about politics. It's about soldiers, and the changes a person goes through when they become one. It's about growing up and learning that at 18 you rarely have figured out who you really are. That is why this book means so much to soldiers. We all go through that journey so reading forces us to relive those times and look back at how much we really have changed. I know the book did not hold the meaning to me it does now until after I had finished all my training and was deployed.
So yes a rant big surprise I know. Just something I had to get off my chest.
