A brief update -
I am in Canberra. Rex is here. My sister is here. I know other people here. Socially, being in Canberra is pretty great. Work-wise, I feel like I've reverted right back to my first rotation in 2010.
I'm doing almost exactly the same sorts of small, disconnected, rote tasks that I've done before, and I'm struggling. I'm too dismissive of the work and making foolish mistakes. Everything could be done better but we simply don't have the systems or the culture that would remove the need for a lot of this work.
So it's pretty much the opposite of Adelaide. I have people to talk to at home and on the weekends, but the work is not exciting and the team is quieter and less inclined to socialise together (more of them also have young kids, which impinges on much of the socialisation). Adelaide had exciting work and a close team, but everything else suffered.
I suppose I should be glad it's not all loaded one way or the other. If I had no one and the work was terrible I don't know what I'd do.
Rex has found some casual work, which makes me feel less bad about dragging him out here. He's literally a 5 minute walk away from our apartment. I'm about a 15 minute walk away. My mum did lend us her car while she's on holiday, but we'll be fine when we have to return it.
I have to think about what happens at the end of this year. I want Adelaide, but I can't pin my hopes on it. I need to start looking wider afield, and clean up my CV.
In other news, I made a pecan pie! So all is not lost.
