I joined the library today! I'd waited to do this since I was hanging out for some proof of address to turn up as I didn't particularly want to use my rental agreement. (My first letter from my electricity provider turns out to be a notification that electricity costs are going to go up. Hooray!) Turns out I probably could have joined without it, as I'm on a probationary account for three months, and then I can prove where I live to get a full account (access to ALL the things, or at least 30 of them at a time).
I should start a collection of all the library cards I've collected over the years. (None of them are as pretty as my giraffe card from Nottingham, though.)
Anyway.
I have a library! It is almost directly across the road from me! I am ridiculously gleeful, especially considering whoever orders stock for them is apparently awesome. I saw Feed, Dawn of the Dreadfuls, Dead Set (which I borrowed), and Queen Victoria, Demonhunter all amongst the collections. Unfortunately there's no section for graphic novels, but that's okay. I know where the comic book store is in the city and it's not too far from work.
I'm so pleased! It doesn't have extensive opening hours so it's not like I'll be able to pop in every day, but I feel relieved just knowing it's there. I don't have to rely on the three books I brought with me any more! It's going to be okay! And if I'm feeling particularly indulgent I could go to the cafe next to the library and have coffee there while I wait for it to open on Saturday mornings!
I've only eaten out once since moving in, when Rex was here. (An organic pizza place a few doors down the road.) But I have plenty of options, all within walking distance.
Apart from that I've been settling into living alone. I spend most nights at home playing with the Xbox or watching DVDs, after I've cooked and tidied up a little (I prefer doing little bits several days in a row rather than doing a big blitz once in a while). I'm noting my eating habits and I'm figuring out what foods to buy in bulk and what foods should just be bought when I actually have a plan for them.
Speaking of the Xbox, I'm getting less anxious about embarrassing myself in game. It's much better to learn on my own, obviously, but there are some games where I tense up over dying so much that I can only play a little at a time (Batman Arkham Asylum), and then there are games so ridiculous that I'm actually having fun (
Bayonetta).
She has guns on her boots! One of her attacks is to stand on her head and fire at enemies! Her clothes are ridiculous, her moves are ridiculous, she wears glasses* and has a random generic British accent while everyone else has a variety of random (semi-generic) American accents. It is utterly redonk (and utterly deserving of the word redonk as a descriptor) and I love it a lot.
What else? My
Spartan resolution is holding - I have not bought any clothes (since the 9th of January), and have stayed within budget limit for my allowed accessory. (For those of you wondering about the Xbox, the resolution is for clothes/fashion-related spending specifically, though it does have the added benefit of cutting down on my aimless wandering around stores which means I have less opportunity to buy things in general.) And hopefully the Xbox will turn out to be a longer-term investment than my clothes have tended to be, previously.
So what was my accessory?
A little fox badge! I found a cute little Japanese shop (
Ikeguchi) which had so many awesome things. I limited myself to this for myself, and some gifts for Rex and my sister. It was about $4 or so.
Tomorrow may be the day I go adventuring! Either to the west side of the city, which is as-yet unexplored, or down on the tram to palindromic Glenelg. Options! Decisions! Stay tuned!
* Okay, so this may be the most awesome thing in the world, ever.
