It's a little annoying that I haven't been skating since I got the news about getting into the league - but I've started work this week and I'm still kind of adjusting.
It is a huge open plan office, with two lunch rooms (one is a little kitchenette and the other is a huge dining hall-type place called "the breakout room" - I could only think of zombies and patient zero so I promptly forgot how to get there afterwards), espresso machines (I haven't played with them yet), a box of fruit delivered every day, newspapers, etc. Kind of different to my last office job. I'm sitting in the middle of most of the finance team, next to the head accountant. She only got back from holiday on Monday and has been scrambling to get the month-end reports completed, so I've been a little neglected so far.
Monday and Tuesday was mostly filing (pull papers out of folders, write down what they are, stick in a box) and basic induction stuff, then being left alone for most of the day entertaining myself (since it's an open plan I have resisted going online). Today I actually got spoken to, and had some training in Excel stuff and scheduling, etc. So that was pretty exciting.
I'm not thrilled about it, if you can't tell.
Yesterday I got caught in the debacle of public transport, wherein a new operator took over the trains on Monday and promptly had to cancel trains and delay several others. Yesterday my line was almost completely shut down and I had to fight my way on to a bus (6 train carriages of people does not equal 3 buses, Metro) and catch two more trains in order to get to work 20 minutes late. Excitement! And the day was completely worth that effort, because I got to spend the day reading reports since no one gave me anything to do and there's nothing I could do yet.
Blah blah I will keep pestering them for work I guess. It's just not boding well for future office jobs if I end up associating them with contemplating how quickly I'd die if I stabbed a pen into my eyeball... for hours on end.
On the upside one of my doodles at work made me think of a potentially cool idea for a tattoo. So there's that.
Anyway. Back to happy things! I will try and bring all my stuff in to work on Friday so I can go skating afterwards. I went for a walk when I got home yesterday with Basil and it was amazing how much more cheerful I felt. I went to the library today and even just wandering around helped.
After all the complaining I've done about being unemployed I guess it's a bit early to start complaining about working, but I just hope they'll trust me with more work soon. I'd love to be too busy to watch the clock.
