I'm not sure how I spent most of today. I'd been considering going skating but since I was a bit sore last night I figured I could afford to be cautious. I went and bought myself a book with my birthday monies (and a discount coupon) - Liar by Justine Larbalestier, and some not so interesting stuff (deoderant, replacement razor heads, etc.)
I'll be going to the rink tomorrow, anyway. The test to be admitted to the league is next Sunday - I know I need to practice (SO MUCH), but there is something about practicing less that makes me perform better. Maybe I should practice lots at the start of the week and give myself a couple of days' break before Sunday? I should have tested this theory out before now, huh? One depressing thought is that since there's been so much interest in roller derby recently, passing the test won't necessarily guarantee you being invited to join (they don't know how many people they'll choose to take this year). I'm thinking of maybe asking to become a referee if I don't get in, though I don't know what sort of requirements there are for that.
I think I have the basics of most of what we've learned so far. Plow stops seem to slow me down rather than stop me, but I got T-stops last night during bootcamp (yay!), jumps are still fun, falls are fun, crossovers are okay (in either direction!), weaving's getting better. I think what will get me is incorrect derby stance, or thinking too much, or (most likely) panicking with other skaters being too near. (Of course, this is just my opinion and I could be completely hopeless objectively...)
Work experience starts next week. Strange to realise I won't have all this spare time any more - and I'll have to actually put some thought into my appearance each day (ARGH). J teased me about wanting to buy new shirts for work, apparently I do it every time I start a new job. It's kind of strange to know we've been together long enough for him to pick out patterns in my habits*.
I don't know how I'll fit in skating during the week if I'm working full-time, but I'd have to figure it out somehow. Other derby girls have managed it!
Still, it'll be nice to go into the city every day again, even if I do have to wear a suit.
For those of you who are interested in more derby (and for those of you who aren't, I'm really very sorry), a few other Melbourne girls are blogging about their experience at
Fresh Melbourne Meat (of course, they seem to have the opposite experience to me so far: great first session, not so great second, and a great third session again.) I'm hoping that means I'll peak again in time for the test. *Crosses fingers*
I also have one
American derby girl's blog (thanks,
raphaela!), and
artemna is another; a webcomic artist who has also recently gotten into derby. (And yes, she does have a
derby girl webcomic, how did you guess?)
Anyway. Derby derby derby derby. There. I think I've officially broken one million mentions of the word derby now.
* 4 years. :O
