A part of me feels weird admitting this, but I think I'm coping a lot better with this winter than I thought I would. I guess it's partly because I've given up on relying solely on layers (I have my big red coat now), but also because I think it's warmer than it was this time in 2005.
I'm not sure what it was like then, obviously. But right now the BBC's weather site says we're hovering between 0C and 5C most days, which in my head sounds pretty damn cold.
So I'm not sure what's happening.
Another part of it is I am no longer being fooled by the fact that the sun is merrily shining most days - back in 2005, I'd always fall for it. "Oh, look, the sun's out! It must be slightly warmer than it would be otherwise!" And I'd leave off wearing a scarf, or gloves, and then I'd suffer for it because the sun is a dirty tricksy Liar McLiar-pants.
It is common to see the sun shining and frost still in patches around the place. In Melbourne, frost melts away by about 9am most mornings if the sun's out.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you Exhibit A:
And Exhibit B:
I took them both this afternoon when I went walking around the University (oh, the memories). True, they weren't in the same spot, but the fact that such extremes exist mean you have to distrust every hint of warmth you see.
The lake in the
Millenium Gardens was frozen over too, with some patches melted away around the fountaining bits. I still cannot resist poking at ice.
Looking through the photos back then - yeah, it snowed in November (a little), and the frost was a lot more prevalent. Three years makes such a difference.
