C.C. catches him eyeing the swing set in the local playground one day on their journey home. She almost teases him about it until she recognizes the faraway look in his gaze and knows he is still thinking of the life he left behind.
"What is it, Lelouch?" she asks softly; she has to be careful, because she remembers she was like this too a hundred lifetimes ago.
Silence greets her, and it is only when she is about to ask again that he answers. "Mother took us out once on one of Father's sailboats," he murmurs quietly, his mind still trapped in his happier childhood memories. "Cornelia and Euphie came along too, even though it was just a cruise within the confines of the bay." He smiles, a little wistfully, a little sadly. "She let us sit on the ropes and we'd swing, sometimes when the boat turned but mostly when we swung it ourselves. It was fun. We had fun."
She watches him carefully, weighs her options before making her decision and clasps his hand with hers as she drags him towards the playground.
"What are you doing?" he asks, a little alarmed by her sudden actions. She does not reply, and only stops when they are standing in front of the swing set.
"Sit," she commands simply; he merely groans in response. "C.C., I don't think-"
"Sit," she repeats. Her tone brooks no opposition, and he recognizes it. Sighing, he does as he is told and sits down - the swing is a little low, which is understandable since it's meant for kids.
Again she surprises him, because her next move is to sit on his lap facing him, her long legs straddling his waist in a position entirely too intimate for their current setting. "C.C.!" he sputters, blushing and checking to see if anyone else is present. "Wh-what're you-"
"Help me push the swing, boy," she commands lazily, cutting him off. "I'm not going to do all the work here."
He obeys, if only so he doesn't have to think about how close she is. It is only after a few minutes of them swinging back and forth and him staring into her golden orbs that he realizes what her intentions are.
"C.C., I..." he begins, unsure of what to say.
"It's okay, Lelouch," she tells him with more than just her words. "It's okay to remember every now and then. Just close your eyes." Uncertain, he maintains eye contact for a while longer before he acquiesces under her piercing gaze.
There in the playground, experiencing only the sensations of the swing's motions and C.C.'s body pressed against his, Lelouch closes his eyes and lets himself drift.
