Yeah, this isn't going anywhere. So if you want three hundred words of a story with no beginning and no end, here's a way to pass a minute or two.

"No." Nathan's voice is low, nearly a growl. "You already had your chance. You already made your choice."
Mara gives him a look like she's bored, but she seems curious in spite of herself. "What are you talking about?"
"The last time you were in the barn, you got to choose; you could come back as anyone you wanted. And you chose Audrey. Even with William right there, even with him right in front of you, you chose Audrey."
"That was a fluke." Mara dismisses his argument with a wave of her hand. "It was a matter of timing. The door had just opened and she happened to hear-" Too late, she cuts herself off.
"She heard us." Nathan finishes her sentence for her, taking a step closer. "She heard me. And this is where she, where you, chose to be." Mara's expression is wavering, like maybe he's starting to get to her, and Nathan presses his luck. "William's gone, Mara, but Audrey's friends are still here. You chose to be her once already. Let her come back."
That, it turns out, was the exact wrong thing to say. He watches her face twist in an anger bordering on hatred, and he never could have imagined that Audrey could form such an ugly expression. More than that, there's a look in her like he's pushed her over the edge.
"It's your fault William's gone," she spits out, and Nathan's not entirely sure of her sanity anymore. She holds out her hand between them, palm up, and sitting there is a stack of the black spheres she'd been using the past weeks to cause deadly Troubles all over town. "And now, you're going to help me get him back."

...I do wish the muse would come back.
