june books 2011

A little overdue. Plus I only read three books last month (June is super!busy!times! at work. Plus, y'know, all the post-finale fanfic is still goin' strong) which is kind of sad. I did start two other books, though. Does that count?

1. Underground by Kat Richardson. Third in the Greywalker series, the first two of which I read in May. They do get a little better, although I think I like the second one best so far (and, hey! I just found out that the library has books four and five available in epub format!). I don't actually remember much about this book except that one of the two things I wanted to see addressed in book one? Happened in Underground. I totally called it. (This is a lousy review, isn't it.)

2. The Search by Nora Roberts. Once upon a time, an f-lister (don't recall who...) recced Nora Roberts. I was actually recced a specific series but couldn't recall its name, so I just picked a couple of novels that sounded interesting. Dog trainer who was once upon a time a victim of a serial murderer, and whose fiancé was killed by same serial killer (now in prison), is now a canine search and rescue team leader. New neighbour (hot artist-type) brings new puppy who eats everything in sight to be trained. Oh noes, someone starts copycat killings in the same manner as they guy who almost got her! Is he merely a fan? In cahoots with Original Serial Killer? Will New Serial Killer come after our heroine? Throw in some romance and a few search and rescues, and there you have it. 'T'was an okay book, but I was driven nuts by the fact that for an author of apparently thirty best-selling novels, Nora Roberts does not understand point of view consistency, OMG. Pick a character and stick to his or her pov until a scene change, please! And also, I like my romance more subtle. Oh well. Can't have it all.

3. Divine Evil by Nora Roberts. As I was browsing through the library's ebook collection, I figured I'd put a handful of her books on hold. This one is a decade or more out of date, which kept throwing me off every now and then. Big-time artist returns to Small Town America, where she grew up and where her dad died. Accident or suicide? No one knows. Except the reader, who will guess pretty soon that it was murder because otherwise, where's the story? Crazy men form a cult, sacrifice goats, and pay prostitutes to play the part of the virgin so they can all have some fun. Except, uh-oh, some of them are crazier than others and they start sacrificing people. Not Good. And, oh noes, recently returned artist is not only carrying barely repressed memories of a ritual she saw as a child, but she's also hooked up with the local sheriff. Naturally, she needs to be taken care of. Again, an okay book but with pov jumps all over the place. Seriously, how does an author publish thirty books and not have an editor along the way point that out?

And that's all for June. Hopefully there will be more for July. If only I could cut back on the fanfic....

ETA: Oh, wait! There was a fourth book! Three Cups of Tea (young readers' edition) by Greg Mortenson. True story of a man who made it his mission to build schools for children who don't have them. Guy's a little crazy but he uses his crazy for good, so, yeah. (Example of craziness: married his wife something like nine days after they met. For reals.) Gives up everything to make it happen, manages to raise funds, eventually forms a charitable foundation. Schools for all! A heartwarming story of People Who Do Good, aww.
