in the category of "is this weird?"....

I was browsing books online (again *cough*) this morning, and came across one whose main character is named Work. And I'm sorry, but I really don't think I could read an entire novel about someone named Work. This isn't the first time I've come across strange character names, and I admit that (with few exceptions) even if I find a summary ( Read more... )

There are so many names out there, people. "Original" =/= better.

I'm actually just finishing reading the first Thursday Next book (for the first time). I kinda love the character name.

Apparently I'm very flexible when it comes to character names.

I still think that's weird. I could probably get used to it if the book were good enough to offset the name, but it's still weird. *nods*

(I am having the oddest sensation of déjà vu right now.)

It's actually a pretty entertaining book.

It's humor (of the "my that's very odd" variety), set in an AU 1985 England (written in 2001) where literature is much more popular than it is in our world. Also, dodo clones are pets. (Shrug.) There's a villain named Archeron Hades who steals a method of actually going into books and affecting the characters in them. The public, of course, is outraged. So Thursday sets out to thwart the villain and preserve the contents of classic literature.

I have only read the first one so far, so I can't speak to the rest of the series, but I liked it.

That does actually sound very interesting. I'll add it to my list. Or at least see if the library has it available. ;)

The first in the series is "The Eyre Affair."

Thanks for providing the title, or I would've just looked for Thursday Next.

It looks like our library currently only has the sixth book in the series. Is it the kind of series where each is dependent on the next, or shall I give All Our Thursdays are Missing a try?

I don't know, I've only read the first one!

Based on that, I would suggest reading them in order.

lol! Okay then. :)

I'll wait and see. I have a long list of books to get through right now, which will probably last me through July, so perhaps the library will have more of the series by then.
