I started reading the Aubery/Maturin (i.e. Master and Commander) series again (I'm on book 16 of the 20-and-a-bit book series) and I keep getting reminded that Stephen Maturin is one of my favorite fictional characters ever. I keep meaning to do a whole write-up (maybe for idol_reflection on why, but I don't want to go through 16 books looking for quotes right now. so for now, a quote relating to the DRUGFIEND!!! facet of his character ...

"Yet [Stephen Maturin] had some faults, and one was a habit of dosing himself, generally from a spirit of inquiry, as in his period of inhaling large quantities of nitrous oxide and of the vapour of hemp, to say nothing of tobacco, bhang in all it's charming varieties in India, betel in Java and the neighboring islands, qat in the Red Sea, and hallucinating cacti in South America, but sometimes for relief from distress, as when he became addicted to opium in one form or another; and now he was busily poisoning himself with coca-leaves, whose virtue he learnt in Peru."

(the haggis just called me in to watch a show on the History Channel about pot. huh ...)
