So I'm not going to make this a friends only thing because I think this just needs to be said about the way the fandom pretty much EXPLODED today.

I'm not going to lie - I was a bit put off when they announced that the new Doctor was twenty-six. I remember reading an interview with Moffat a while back saying that he thought the Doctor should be this older kooky professor type man and well....Matt Smith is far from a kooky old looking professor.

And looking at pictures of him I was also slightly put off. Not because he looks 'ugly' or 'weird' looking, but because he looks alien and I love that. Because at the end of the day, the Doctor is a Time Lord. He isn't human. He is an alien and I think sometimes people forget that. I think the fandom needs to sit the hell down and not freak the hell out about how he looks. Are we really that shallow? I mean, yes, we have to look at the guy for about 45 minutes every week for 13-14 episodes a series and for how many series we don't know yet. But I mean c'mon. You can't tell me you were watching William Hartnell and thinking 'ooh yeah baby. Unf, unf,' the entire time he was on screen. If you were, good for you, but don't write this man off because he doesn't look good to your specific specifications.

After watching his extended interview I was pretty much sold on him being Eleven. He looks eccentric, he looks like he could not only play funny, cheeky, and hyper, but also moody and serious, and tortured and all those other vast array of emotions that make up our most beloved Doctor. And he had that twinkle in his eye....that Time Lord Twinkle or whatever you want to call it. And he seems very well versed and excited and just happy to freaking be in that seat.

I wasn't around for when they announced David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, but judging from initial reaction posts when that casting announcement was made it seemed people were really pissed and didn't want to give him a chance. Now half the fandom is mourning the loss of what they believe to be the best Doctor yet.

Yes, I love Ten as much as the next person. Yes, I will probably cry buckets during his last episode and not want to face the fact that we will no longer have a Doctor who has oral fixations, brainy specs, and who enjoys saving the universe in a good used pair of chucks. But I don't think Moffat and the other Powers That Be are walking into this blind or made a stupid decision.

This was the person they thought was most qualified for the job. These men (and women) are professionals and have been working in this field for quite some time. And being a semi-working actor I know what goes into making an audition work and how the people sometimes choose the actors they do. It seems to me that Mr. Smith had a good audition, is going to work well with Moffat and Co. and has the stamina and grace and ability to carry one of the most (obviously) beloved and followed shows in the history of British television and Sci-Fi as well. Believe me, if they couldn't think he could pull it off there would be another man (or woman) on that Confidential talking about being the next Doctor.

So do not lose faith fellow Whovians. I am completely reserving judgment until the opening credits of series five of Doctor Who appear on my television (or computer) screen.

As for you Mr. Matt Smith: Eleventh Doctor....don't you dare make me eat my words.

sit the fuck down fandom., doctor who, eleven, 2009
