I walked down to town today to buy my friend's daughter a Christmas present. Her husband is English (even if he has been living in the States long enough to no longer have an accent), so I thought it'd be good to get her a couple of typically English children's books. So, obviously, I got a Paddington Bear book and another one called That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown, there's lots of talk of the Queen and admirals and RAF men. The illustrations are quite interesting, actually.
I called Ryland to find out what he was doing for the RWC game tomorrow night and was invited down to the pub. When I got there, I found the entire table absolutely littered with empty pint glasses. I don't know how any of them could speak, much less stand upright. I think Ryland said he'd had about 10 pints, I'd have been absolutely shattered by that point, but he actually seemed quite lucid. Anyhow, had a pint and headed home. I also found out that tomorrow night everyone's heading down to town, so I've got to get gussied up as they don't allow you to wear sneakers in the pub we're going to.
Can I just use this space to mention how much I love The West Wing? I was able to download the 4th season (that Will Bailey has captured my heart) and have been on a binge ever since. I like to call it "pounding some Wing." You're free to use to that, it's a gift. Anyhow, I realized that if anyone ever asked me who my favorite character was I would never be able to tell them. It would be a tie between Toby, Sam, CJ, Will, the President, Charlie and Leo. Oh hell, and Margaret while we're at it. And I love Josh and Donna. And Nancy. If it really came down to it though, I'd have to say a Battle Royale between the speech writers; Toby, Sam and Will.
I saw an amazing episode of WDYTYA today in which the guy going through his tree (British athlete and I absolutely cannot remember his name) found out that he was a direct descendent of William the Conqueror! Can you believe that? At the beginning, his family had thought they were descendents of the founder of Jardine Matheson as well as being heavily involved in the opium trade. Turns out it was a different William Jardine who was a naturalist. He traced his line back through a number of knights and crossed the line into royalty at Edward I and it was nothing but kings all the way back to William. And, of course, just to show that it existed, the historian showed him a scroll that suggests he's a direct descendent of God (kings had to prove they were descended from the ultimate royalty, as it were). The fact that the scroll even exists is brilliant in and of itself.
Brilliant episode of QI on tonight. Actually, two brilliant episodes, but the second holds a special place in my heart because dear, sweet Vic Reeves was on. Even if he did talk about that other woman (i.e. his wife). I do have to say that I felt a keen loss at the lack of a waistcoat.
On a completely different note, my friend's set just went live over at Suicide Girls (
suicidegirls.com). If you've got a subscription go check it out, her SG name is Justine.
