i love records

A big storm is blowing over as I type, so I hope it doesn't go knocking down some power lines and cutting the 'leccy for me. I have an update to write! All I really want to do is write about my records, because by golly, I have all these new records and I've barely listened to any of them, and it's a real shame because there are some bloody corkers in there. But, of course, I would say that. So, here's what I've acquired in the last three weeks or so.

Vinyl
Felt - Bubblegum Perfume
I think Sydney is my Felt records town. At the beginning of last year, I found three Felt records for $10 each - unbelievable! Considering they're just about impossible to track down, I thought this was quite a find. So, imagine how I felt when I found another one this time around - wahey! It's a collection of songs from their Creation era, and it's really good. Let me stress that: really good. I'm in love with this record. You know, not just because it's Lawrence, and not just because it's Felt, and not just because they are Stuart Murdoch's favourite band, but because the songs are such classics. 'Ballad of the Band' is now one of my favourite songs. In any case, could any other band get away with publishing the song titles along the spine of a record sleeve?

The Smiths - s/t
I have a rule whereby I won't pay more than $15 for a Smiths record. Rockinghorse sells them for $25, but I think I've paid about $13 for each of mine. I found this copy at Red Eye - it's the UK pressing, too! I haven't been in a Smiths mood in a while, but no doubt I'll move straight into one as soon as I put this on.

Primal Scream - Crystal Crescent EP
Okay, I was in Rockinghorse today, and there's always stuff I see in there that I really want - you know, overpriced Television Personalities singles and Trembling Blue Stars albums people have hocked in. But today was extraordinary. Casually flicking through the new arrivals vinyl section, I saw 'Crystal Crescent' and nearly fucking screamed. Seriously. It was FATE to have that record sitting there, waiting for me. I've been obsessed with 'Velocity Girl' of late, and so I did a search to find where I could find it. After discovering this EP, I did a search on ebay, only to find some twat in the UK wanting about AU$80 for it. MORON! This was two days ago, so to find it today was very spooky. It's in mint condition and I've already played it a couple of times. I'm in love. Why Primal Scream have chosen to ignore the best part of their career (apart from Sophie Dahl's menacing militia girl in the 'Swastika Eyes' film clip) on their best-of compilation is beyond me. I am in love.

CDs
The Brunettes - When Ice Met Cream
This was almost not to be. Last night, The Brunettes came to town and it was stinking fucking hot inside Rics. Like, Sweat Running Down The Back Of Your Legs Hot. Sweat Everywhere Hot. URGH! Despite the wall of humidity, the band played on, and played a cracking set, to which I danced and sashayed and batted my eyelids at all and sundry on stage. YUM! Afterwards, one of the wimpy other guys (i.e. not Jonathan or Heather) was selling merch. Ryan was telling me about a new Brunettes EP that he had been trying to track down for ages. Once all the spazzes had raided the merch suitcase, we were aghast to discover there was only one copy of this coveted CD left, because the wimpy guy had forgot to pack more for that night's show. Bah! Ryan really wanted it, but I also really wanted it. The wimpy guy told us we should just download it haha. In the end, I won out, but only because Cat had already bought a copy, and so they wouldn't have two copies in the house. I'm hoping it'll be as cute as the other albums. Actually, it had better be good because, as well as buying a t-shirt, the Brunettes merch stall has cleaned me out of pretty much all my money until next week. Better than food, though.

#poundsign# - Underneath The Marquee
Back to Sydney record shopping...I was in the Red Eye second hand stall, and you know how it's almost obligatory to look in the cheap CD bins, hoping to find something good, apart from crap dance remix albums? Well, I struck gold. POUNDSIGN FOR FIVE BUCKS. I squealed. I barely cared for anything else in the shop. POUNDSIGN. Oh god, I love the band so much. This is their second album and I swear, everything they've done has just been great. Why anyone would've hocked that in is beyond me.

The Purple Hearts - Head On Collision Time Again!/Pop-ish Frenzy
80s second-era mods. I haven't listened to these albums yet, but I've heard their first album and thought it was very sharp. I think I'm just a sucker for boys on scooters wearing sharp suits and pretending Carnaby Street was still as hip as it was in the sixties.

Jens Lekman - When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog/Oh You're So Silent Jens
Donat bought me 'When I Said...' for Christmas - I only had a downloaded copy of it until then. I love this album, and I am so bitter at myself for missing him when he came to town last year. Audible sigh. I really need to listen to 'Oh You're So Silent Jens' because, goddamn, any boy that covers TVP songs and samples B&S really should be mine. Oh, if only..

The Who - My Generation
Another Christmas present. Such a brilliant album. This is the deluxe edition, so the second CD is full of bonus tracks. It's so schmick - it's a shame I hadn't bought it until now!

Clearly, after all this record shopping, I have to delay any record orders for quite some time now. It's okay - I'm sure the Slumberland goodies I'm looking for won't be going anywhere soon...
