Gerard thought it must have been one of the few times he was actually happy to be waking up at some ungodly hour to go to work. Of course, all of his days with Frank even when they had been homeless were reason enough for him, to want to open his eyes and start their crappy day but this, this topped it all off.

Pushing his legs down towards the end of the bed and running his feet over the large double bed Gerard sighed as the coolness of the sheets hit his skin. He sighed again and opened his eyes, his view pleasing him. Frank was snuggled up into his side with his hair a mess and arm slung around his lover. He was still breathing a little uneven but even then Gerard thought it sounded like the cutest thing ever. Pulling him into his chest a little more Gerard settled a small and gentle kiss onto Frank’s head and closed his eyes for a little longer.

Knowing he had to move from the warm embrace of his partner and actually face the world was not a good feeling for Gerard as he squinted over to the small clock that read 5.30am on the microwave Hev had brought them. He knew he had to start work at around 6am and that meant he would have to leave Frank for the day. Moving Frank’s arm gently from around him Gerard then settled his lover’s head onto the pillow instead of his chest and slowly moved from the bed. Once standing on the floor Gerard turned his head quickly to see if Frank had woken. Seeing that the coast was clear Gerard grabbed his door key and padded out in to the hallway and down the corridor to the shared bathroom.

It didn’t take long for Gerard to wash and get dressed but as he was doing so he came to realise just how many things they would actually need to start living properly. For example, Gerard found himself pretty lost when he had no washcloth to actually wash with, or no toothpaste to use. He knew that in a few more days they would be able to go shopping and buy some more necessities but until then, they would have to make do with what they had.

Walking back to their room Gerard quietly opened the door and grabbed his jacket. He burrowed in the pockets and pulled out a $10 bill. He smiled at it and placed it near the microwave hoping that Frank would see it and realise it was for him. Once he was ready he walked back over to the bed, leant down to place a kiss on Frank’s head and set off to work.

It didn’t take long for Frank to stir from his sleep as his lungs were still pretty tight and coughing was inevitable. Gasping for breath Frank sat up right in bed, slightly confused as to where he was. Realising he was at home Frank smiled and threw the covers from his body. He grabbed a mug he had seen the night before and wandered over to their sink and filled it up with water. Gulping it down he gasped a little but felt much better. Once regaining breath he took his medicine the hospital had given him from his bag and took two, hoping that would help him to breathe easier.

Moving back over to the bed Frank pulled the covers back and jumped back inside. Snuggling down he smiled and sighed, revelling in the feeling that he was home and that this bed that felt fucking heavenly was theirs. He dropped back off to sleep for a while before opening his eyes once more and beaming at his surroundings. It would never get old, Frank thought about the feeling of actually having a home. Not that many people would appreciate what that meant but from living on the streets, he did. Having a roof over their heads was one of the most heavenly things that could have happened to the pair.

Upon waking up a few hours later this time Frank rose from the bed and skittered over to the sink to pour another drink. Whilst settling his mug down onto the side once again he noticed the bill left near the microwave. Smiling and knowing Gerard had left them for him made it even more real that this was in fact happening. Deciding to venture out a little Frank threw some of his few clean clothes on and grabbed the key Gerard had also left for him once pushing the money deep inside his pocket. Locking the door carefully and making sure everything was in order he wandered down and out into the street. He didn’t really know his way around this part of town as he had never really had the need to but this time, he needed to find his way to something.

Deciding to turn left he wandered down the street with his hands pushed into his pockets and his chest still a little tight. He knew of course, he would be able to cope with the little wheeze as his lungs had protested much more in previous years and when he was in hospital just a few days ago. Once walking for around 10 minutes Frank came face to face with a cheap enough looking corner shop. Smiling again he gripped the money that was in his pocket and all but ran into the shop.

It had been years since Frank had been shopping and when that word was used, he wasn’t talking about shop lifting the odd sandwich so the pair wouldn’t die of hunger or maybe scraping change to purchase a bottle of water so he could take his medication. No, Frank thought of shopping, as running through the door eagerly and grasping the shopping basket in his hands, just like his mother used to let him do on their weekly shop. Frank smiled at the memory but decided he couldn’t dwell on it for too long and scurried down the first little isle to see what he could find.

It didn’t take long for him to fill up his basket and mentally count to $10 in his head and when he had Frank wandered over to the counter to check out. He smiled the whole time he bagged the items up and when he paid and even when he had to carry the heavy bags back home by himself. Of course, Frank hoped that all the things he had brought could be cooked via the microwave or by adding boiling water and if not, well they would have fun experimenting for the while.

When Gerard arrived home later that day Frank had already made the bed, cleaned the small living space and was standing reading some cooking instructions in hope that he would be able to make his lover something before he returned home.

“Hey Frankie,” Gerard greeted his partner whilst closing the door. Gerard’s voice sounded pretty beat.

“Gee! I didn’t think you would be home yet, I was just trying to make something.” Frank whined, his plan was ruined.

“You went shopping?”

Frank nodded and smiled as Gerard walked over to him and wrapped his arms around his middle. Leaning back into the embrace Frank tilted his head and kissed Gerard’s lips lightly.

“Yeah, I brought what I could and what I thought we could actually make with what we have.”

“You’re the best, you know that?”

Frank grinned and pecked his lover on the lips once again before adding “I do try.” Followed by a wicked grin.

Gerard hugged Frank tighter and rubbed his gloved fingers over Frank’s clothed hip.

“How about we eat something then snuggle in bed?” Gerard suggested. It had been years since the pair had been able to actually lie down in one another’s arms instead of being huddled and cramped on a park bench or in their alley. Of course, they wouldn’t have traded those memories for the world but it was just nice to have a place of their own to lay and just be with one another.

“That sounds like the best plan you’ve ever had.”

And so with the microwave Hev had bought for them they cooked a small micro meal each and settled down onto their bed to eat. Both stayed fairly quiet whilst eating, savouring the taste and the feel of actual hot food in their mouths. Frank thought that feeling was never going to grow old again, not now they knew to appreciate those little things. Once they had finished eating the pair settled their trays and cutlery on the floor and stripped from their clothes and into underwear. Gerard made a mental note that the next few times he would be paid they could go clothes shopping for a few new items.

Snuggling down into the heavy covers that night and resting his head on Gerard’s chest Frank felt as if all the troubles and hardships had been brushed away and he would never, ever have to see them again. He just hoped things would stay that way.
