It's a grey and cool Sunday in London, the first one in a while that I don't seem to have anything on (I have conveniently misplaced my to-do list!)
The last couple of week-ends were spent in the garden lifting the dahlias and planting bulbs. We applied for tickets for today to a recording of One Night Only with Bette Midler, presented by Joanna Lumley but we didn't get them :-(
So, I thought it'd be a good chance to look back at our trip to Prague at the end of September for Adrian's birthday.
The flight from London Heathrow to Prague was quite early, so we had almost a full afternoon of sightseeing in town.
We travelled from the hotel in Praha 3 to the Old Town by underground.
Here's the Powder Gate next to the beautiful Art Noveau Municipal House
Of course it was soon time to stop for some refreshments, and we called at the Grand Café Orient on the first floor of the cubist House of the Black Madonna, on Celetná Street, the pedestrian thoroughfare that connects the Powder Gate to the Old Town Square.
We had chocolate (did Adrian have rum in his? I think so! LOL)
Adrian had apple strudel, and I had a chocolate fondant rolled in marzipan and served with prunes soaked in Port: yummy!
We enjoyed the food and the ambience so much that we went back there a few days later for a light, late lunch!
We then walked to the Old Town Square which is surrounded by beautiful houses and was very busy with tourists.
We got there just in time for the famous astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall to strike 5 o'clock and watch its procession of apostles at the top, and other figures (Vanity and Greed on the left, Death and a Turk on the right) on the middle layer moving.
The shows is over when the cock crows.
We then walked up to the Rudolfinum (home of the Czech Philarmonic Orchestra) and crossed the Vltava river to Malá Strana (the 'Little Quarter') where we caught the underground back to the hotel.
We had our first sighting of the famous Charles Bridge
Dinner was at a restaurant near the hotel. Google says that is an "Elegant & contemporary dining room in a historic building with refined, French-style menu" but by then it had been turned into a gourmet burger restaurant. Adrian's burger was excellent and my pulled pork 'naked' burger was delicious.
We had beers (the Czechs drink more beer per person than any other nation).
