How are a very loud banging noise at home this morning, Tucson, AZ and a toothache related?

Well the noise came from the boiler in the kitchen (it happened before but this morning was much louder). it was so bad that we had the boiler checked.
Apparently it's due to a build up of scale but the boiler is around 15 years old and, according to the engineer, it's a disaster waiting to happen.

As we don't really want a repeat of the last days of Pompeii, we need to change it to a new model (that should also be more energy efficient). The quote is about £1,800 which is a LOT of money.

At the week-end we discussed a trip to Arizona and perhaps Palm Springs and Las Vegas for January (to coincide with the La Fiestas del los Osos in Tucson of which Ross & Jim have spoken so well) but we were not sure we could afford it.
So the noise this morning was definitely the sound of the nails being driven in the Tucson coffin. Oh well, they say that Skegness is lovely in January (not!)

Or it could have been screams of pain: Adrian had to wait for the engineer who was running late. As a result he missed the train and the appointment at the dentist's to sort out a toothache he's had on and off for the last couple of weeks. Now he has to wait till Tuesday. Poor Adrian :-(

This evening we are going to see "The little shop of horrors" at the theatre: very fitting title!!
(though hopefully it'll cheer us up)
