Eurovision 2013

I think it was the best Eurovision final ever!
The host Petra Mede - a Swedish comedian - was brilliant and funny; she even sang a very amusing "Swedish Smörgåsbord" in the interval which also featured two gentlemen kissing.

I like Italy and Greece's selections, but most of the songs didn't engage me. I have to admit ... Most Americans know little to nothing about the Eurovision competition. It is a songwriting competition, right? You're right about the host, Petra. She was terrific!

Probably me being Captain Obvious here, but ESC has developed into a contest about who can deliver the best _ESC_-type song/performance. Very self-referential, I'd say, if I knew what that meant :-)

Every country presents a song but it's really more about the whole package (singer, song, outfit, performance, gimmick!).
Since the end of Yugoslavia and the collapse of the Soviet Union, we've had 'block voting' (i.e. vote for your neighbour). But it's still great fun!

It's refresing to see a competition in the arts, as opposed to sport.

Yes I enjoyed the final totally.

I loved the insider-ish Carola joke. Although I was pumped for an actual Carola wind machine stomper. Nice she can laugh at herself.

My tops match yours but swap Germany for Hungary. Even if she was pitchy and totally copying last years winner AND wearing shoes to big for her, I liked it.

Lynda Woodruff was my absolute favourite. I forgot she read the Swedish votes last year (until YouTube reminded me). Did BBC cut away from Lynda? I notice the BBC runs a lot of Graham Norton programming instead of the interstitial bits.

So what was up with that "Hashtag MILF" comment (I heard the BBC muted the comment on the tape delay … Germany carried it. Totally crass. Did they spank the little pipsqueak afterwards. Petra looked furious when they cut back to her … but it's hard to read Petra and hard to know when she's in on the *joke* or not.

This year i watched the German feed for that reason and because the Swiss commentator is far to chatty.

That final is going to be a hard act to follow.

No we saw Lynda on the BBC and she was very funny too.

But yes we didn't get the Hashtag MILF... they could have left it in as I had no idea what MILF meant (but now Adrian has filled me in).
