A shameful secret

I couldn't swim until I got rid of my fear of being underwater...there is a high correlation between swimming and being underwater. My father spent a whole day with me..having me hold onto the side of the pool while I completely submerged myself. First for a few seconds..then for increasingly longer periods. Once I cleared that hurdle..I was swimming in days. Give it some thought.

You should try to learn. Seriously.

I tried last summer, but honestly I'm so seldom around a pool. It doesn't usually affect my life. Someday I *would* like to know how.

I always miss not being able to swim when we go to Sitges.

Yes, it'd be great to know how to swim even if one doesn't have the chance to do it often.

Good for you! Don't be ashamed. Instead, learn to swim. It's a better use of your time :)

I've taught a couple of adults to swim in my day. One was terrified of the water, the other just happened to have never learned. Both did fine.

It's outrageous that others would make you feel self conscious while you were trying to overcome something that scared you. Don't hesitate to tell them to go away, or to tell the instructor to tell them. They have absolutely no right to do that to you. I'm particularly angry because they're swimmers and should support people learning to swim. Cunts.

Well I'd never dare to complain about that - I'll just have not to look around next Sunday!

I'm going to try on my own later in the week (although it's kind of difficult without being a nuisance to other swimmers)

This is impressive. I didn't learn to swim as a small child as I was terrified. I eventually learned by wearing a big face mask and exploring the bottom of the pool, becoming happy with the way I felt underwater and finally returning to the idea of the surface as air/faster propulsion issue.

I am delighted you've decided to learn.

Thank you for sharing your experience!
I'm going to get some goggles and become acquainted with the bottom of the pool too. I think it should help.

I can swim...but I can't ride a bicycle.

Feel better? ;{)}
