Indian handbook

Jan 16, 2009 16:41

This memo was sent to the Indian staff travelling to the the UK, following reports of some "incidents".

1. The UK office is less hierarchical than in India and every member of staff is expected to be treated politely & equally.

2. The UK culture encourages people to question politely when you don't understand. People from the UK will get frustrated very quickly if you do not ask questions when you don't understand, if it is evident that you have not understood later.

3. People in India stare at people without causing offence. It is considered very rude to stare at people who you do not know in the UK.

4. It is considered rude to burp in public in the UK.

5. In the UK staff are expected to do their own admin work, like filling paper in printers, moving your own PC from one desk to another in case of a desk move, etc.

6. It is considered rude to speak to colleagues in your local language when you are in the office in the UK. Always speak in English in the office or in groups with colleagues.

7. A vertical nod of the head is considered to be a Yes, all other head movements are generally considered to be a No.

I'd like you to pay particular attention to point 1 and 6.
