1066 country

My friend Franco is safely back in Italy. This time he couldn't say that he is always lucky with the weather in London!
But the rain didn't manage to spoil his visit or our week-end. We hired a car and drove around the beautiful countryside, all bright with autumnal colours. It is not quite as good as New England (you don't get those reds and purples: it is mainly yellows, oranges and rusty colours here) but still quite lovely.

On Saturday we headed towards Hastings

and visited the ruins of the abbey in Battle which was built on the site of the famous battle of Hastings (1066: WIlliam the Conqueror's Normans vs. King Harold's Anglo-Saxons)

Next stop was the quaint town of Rye, just a couple of miles from the sea.
We had always wanted to go and see it because Tilling the imaginary village in E. F. Benson's "Mapp and Lucia" books is modelled on Rye.
It didn't disappoint: we loved it! We are in fact thinking of going there for the week-end soon.

P.S: I took all these photos with the (new-ish) compact camera. I don't think it is a good as my SRL but it fits in my pocket.
