I wrote this review a while ago and posted it on goodreads now I shall post it here.
The hunger games has been recieving hype for a while now. It was up for the Newberry and the Prinz. It was on Amazon's best books of '08. And you know what? It deserves it. It's well written, addicting and just fun to read. It's set a couple hundred years in the future. North america is gone, in it's place is Panem. Run by the capitol twelve districts in its rule. It used to be thirteen but when they rebelled the capitol destroyed them. So you get it, it's all very 1984. But then you have this thing called the hunger games this SURVIVOR-like reality show that takes two teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 to the "arena" to fight it out until one is left. The winner will get fame fortune and all that jazz. The rest: death, it's all very battle royale, right? So you have our protag Katniss Everdeen. She's from district 12 the poorest of the districts. She has to kill her own food and feed her sister and mother since her father died in a coal-mining accident. So we start off on reaping day, the day that the names for the hunger games is called. Katniss' sister Prim is called and Katniss volenteers in her place. Along with Peeta the baker's son as the boy tribute they're off the the capitol. And you know blah, blah, blah they get interviewed the media frenzy begins. And as it turns out Katniss' fellow tribute is in love with her or so we think for five minutes until we figure out it's just a ploy to get more fans and sponsers. Sponsers being important because they get you things you need. Anywho, so Katniss and the rest of the tribute ar edumped into the "arena" where you could be anyewhere from the arctic to the dessert to a giant cake. But this "arena" is just a forest like place. And so it begins...
What I got from Hunger games was the ever lasting question that has been brought up since lord of the flies came out. What are children/adolesents are capable of when no one/everyone is watching?
The hunger games isn't original as you can tell with all my referances, but it still had that originality that made you think "ooh that's new". The cliffhanger ending was pretty brutal and I can not wait until september to get my hands on the seque catching fire. I honestly was pretty fasinated with the world Collins created. Brutal and gritty and oh-so fantastic. I'd like to know other things about Panem how it is for other districts. Stuff like that. Also I'm hoping that one of the books will have the hunger games again but a behind the scenes look in the control room.
So that's my review as you can I'm not very good at them. But hey its something to do.
