Welcome to Night Vale
so yeah, every now and then I encounter Welcome to Night Vale fanart and other fanwork on tumblr and at first I thought it to be just another random little fandom...
then I got curious as to what that actually was, a tv show? a comics? I found out it was a fairly popular podcast
(made even more popular through the ever infamous tumblr spreading and apparently with the help of the equally infectious hannibal fandom due to some kind of crossover possibilities with certain similarities in gore and surrealism I think xD)
so, that totally didn't sound like something I'd end up liking
the hannibal hype didn't get me either back when it started but I also used to watch a few episodes and then decided: nope
likewise, I thought I'd give this podcast a try
and to my surprise I actually really quite like it and I don't really know why
sure, the narrator, cecil, is quite charming with his monotone delivery of the news and I really like the phrasings
also quite amusing are the moments when he breaks into utter yet calm rage and/or gushing over a certain very beautiful person xDDD!
Night Vale is a very...interesting city...
everything is so brutal and weird and...dada
most of the podcast is just crack and pseudo-philosophical blah (yet sometimes also surprisingly sociocritical - or is it?) but it does draw a certain picture of that fictional city and produces some weird kind of humour, I don't know, it's just charming and has me chuckling and going "what the hell" all the time xD
or stuff is so abstract that you find yourself smirking going "yeah sure" nodding along, almost numb to the weirdness of everything
just like the citizens of Night Vale seem to be totally disconnected from any of the happenings
I like how the fanwork is ten times scarier/creepier than the actual show (although then again it's most often cute fluff artwork of the main couple....)
it's too much crack for me to think "ouh that's frightening!" although of course from a normal pov that city is totally fucked and just nope!
I'm looking forward to that mirror-verse thingy XDDD
so yeah, just saying that this podcast is actually quite cool and amusing - would recommend
and for something that I thought to be very much like the homestuck fandom (sorry but not my cup of tea...at all) I am pleasantly surprised!
and now I find myself curious of what else might befall Night Vale and its inhabitants~
