For anyone who wants some local colour for a fic, or who wants to know what Manchester looked like in the past, The Manchester Local Image Collection has over 80,000 images of Manchester and its suburbs. The original images are mainly photographs with some prints, drawings, watercolours and postcards, dating from the eighteenth century to the present day. The collection doesn't seem to be browsable, but if you enter a fairly generic search term such as 'street' or 'police' or 'bomb' you'll get several pages of hits.

Or check out the work of L.S. Lowry, 1887-1976, known for his paintings of Lancashire street scenes. Google will bring up plenty of images, or there's a vid here
