His breath caught sharply in his throat at the last word. He took Kiku's hand and squeezed.
"How are you doing?"
Which was the short version of all the questions in his head. How did Kiku feel? Had he managed to make up with his father before his death? Had the rest of his family made things worse while he was there?
It would be easier to give facts than try to explain his confused feelings. He was too tired to properly analyze how he felt anyway.
"He was already gone before my plane landed. The typhoon had me delayed for a while too...trains weren't running from the main station. By the time I was able to get to my mother... I didn't even recognize him when they showed me his body. I barely recognized my mother. The first time in ten years..."

"Seems so," he replied, propping himself up on an elbow to look at his boyfriend. "How was the trip?"
He figures it'd be better if they got the question out of the way first, deal with whatever needs to be dealt with.
