Willem wasn't sure he could quite explain what was going on in his head concerning a certain Dane, for it was all too mixed up.

The events of March had been forgiven, because Willem could see how somethings might have looked. But they hadn't been forgotten, because the four years before that should have at least won him the right to explain. Then had come the other man's decision to stay in Denmark, which Willem couldn't fault him for because family came first. What he couldn't get past was that Søren hadn't felt the need to let him know in person, or to send him so much as an e-mail since then.

Even a month later, he still wasn't sure how he felt about it. But he did know that he didn't want to spend the other man's birthday staring at his walls. So instead he dropped in on the other person who probably hated spending this day alone.

Now standing on the other man's doorstep, he shifted the alcohol he'd brought and knocked on the door.

With a shout to whomever was beyond the threshold, it took him a couple of seconds to amble from the kitchen to the front door, peeling it open with a tired expression. Instantly he brightened, however, moving in for his now customary greeting of leeching onto Willem until he was blue in the face from the tiny Dane's bear-like vice.

"You realize you're some kind of special, right?" Kai alerted him with a teasing lilt. "I told everyone else to fuck off today and leave me the hell alone."

"Even Valdi?" Willem asked, shifting the bag in his arms to ruffle the hair of the man currently attached to him. "I must be special then."

He followed the other man inside, closing the door with his foot as he studied the inside of Kai's new home.

"I brought alcohol. Didn't seem right to go through today without it."

"Even Valdi," Kai assured him. "I asked if we could hang out yesterday instead, though we'll probably talk on the phone or text sometime tonight. He's got some camp thing he's leaving for tomorrow for a week."

One week without Valdi. Goddamn, that sounded like an eternity at this point.

"Ahh, we can probably make ourselves cozy in the kitchen a bit or my room. Depending on when you want to start drinking," He trotted a bit further into the living space to give Wilm some room. "I can give you the grand tour, though? I don't think anyone is home. Maybe Manny, but he might be paintin' bein' he's been so quiet."

The answer to his teasing caused him to pause for a moment in surprise. He had assumed that Valdi either didn't know what today was or hadn't come because he wanted to give the other man space, and he wasn't sure what to think about the information that it wasn't so.

"Grand tour," he replied. "Although let me set this down first."

The truth of the matter was, whether Willem knew or not (though he'd soon find out if drinking was on their plans for the evening), was that the young Dane looked up to him like a younger brother to their older. Without Søren around he had become surrogate family; someone Kai deeply respected and admired. If his real brother couldn't be there to spend the day with him..

His smile waned a bit in it's splendor, hollow for a ghost of a moment before he managed to pick back up into high spirits. "Just leave it by the door for the moment. We'll come back for it in just a sec, yeah?"

Willem left the bag where he was told, and followed the other man through the house.

"What are you doing with the old apartment."

"Waiting on Søren to make a decision," He sighed heavily. "I'm trying to see if maybe I can't get someone to rent it out. I feel like a dick giving it up entirely.. memories and all, that sappy bullshit. I even put his goddamn couch in storage just in case he wants it."

Or just in case he comes back, was the unspoken hidden meaning. Kai had no idea if that was a likely possibility or not; he could dream, he could hope, he could wish twice at day at precisely 11:11. None of it would make a lick of a difference until his brother made that decision, until his Aunt's bill of health was a clean slate.

"So, here's the most important room -- the kitchen," Kai swung open the door for Willem to see the Beilschmidt kitchen in all it's grandeur, all glitter and shine from where he had cleaned it until it gleamed the day before. "He's got all sorts of awesome shit, spices from all over, tools, gadgets. I feel like I'm in heaven."

Willem heard the wistful tone in the other man's voice, and it caused an answering feeling from inside him. Angrily, he pushed the feelings away and merely nodded.

That anger bled off, however, when they entered the kitchen. Kai was so proud of the kitchen you'd think he'd built it himself, and it was obvious it was a very well taken care of room. He turned to the other man with a fond smile.

"Knowing you, I'm not surprised."

"Man, we ought to get up to some cooking while you are here. Check this -- he's got that fucking dank ass vanilla. The kind that comes in the tiny bottle for $30 a pop," Kai relayed to him in a tone that sounded much like a mother bragging over their child in their first school play. "Not to mention, he's got these like.. recipe books with the craziest things I've ever seen! Like cupcakes with strawberries that you set on fireHe could rant and rave about the kitchen all goddamn damn, and more than likely probably would; but-- tour. Right. Grand tour ( ... )

The Dutchman shrugged.

"Nothing wrong with a neat space." he said simply.

Then his mouth twisted into a wry grin.

"Must have driven Søren crazy though. Any space he lived in usually ended up looking like a disaster area."

"He resisted in like a kid resisting taking a bath. He gave me so much hell. Filling the sink with dishes, leaving muddied shoes prints on the floor, his clothes everywhere.. That kind of stuff drives me batshit," Kai shook his head with a cringe. "I like things to be clean, clean, clean. Gilbert's wasn't much better when I first moved here."

He glanced up to his friend, lips quirked in silent question while his mind rifled through a list of different things.

"Thank you for coming over today," He finally settled on.

Willem's smirk turned softer.

"I wasn't going to leave you alone."

The smile turned wistful.

"And I do miss the sukkel."

The wistful look and the words to place with him churned another question in his mind, a softer, more concerned look crossing the Dane's face. "You never really did say much about Søren leaving. Not that there was much anyone could say, just.. how do you feel about the whole thing?"

Kai flopped down on the edge of his bed with a heavy sigh, peering up at Willem through the messy strands of amethyst, not yet having taken the time to spike his hair up in it's normal proud stance. "Penny for your thoughts, they say. Though we could make cupcake batter and eat from the bowl with huge wooden spoons and have a giant get your feelings out there session. Or I can turn you into a nice pillow again."

Willem's wistful look turned into a grimace.

"If we're going to share feelings, then I'm going to need that cupcake batter. And probably something with much more alcohol."

He figured he could probably get Kai talking and not have to do much in the way of actual sharing.

"And after that we'll see about the pillow. Although I didn't bring any weed with me this time."

"I can play baker if you'll play bartender," Kai shrugged with a helpless smile. "And I've got a blunt or two to spare if time brings us to that. Otherwise, I've got some smoking cloves. Those are right nice for unwinding if you ask me."

Up on his feet again with a quick bounce he crooked his arm and promptly linked it with Willem's at the elbow, hauling him out of the room and back to the kitchen in small, weaving paths. "And you better be my pillow if I'm making you cupcake batter!"
