Roderich was, miraculously, at work today. He had forced himself out of bed and actually walked all the way from his house to the museum - or as he liked to call it: the hellhole.
He scooted his chair away from his desk and stood up. He stepped out of his office - being an assistant curator had its perks - and walked to the front of the museum, thinking it would help kill time.
The place was barren, as it usually was, and nothing had changed much.
Except for a boy sitting in the reception desk.
Roderich didn't recall having a male receptionist before. Then again, he hadn't come to work in days.
He matched over to the front of the desk and gazed down at the boy. Not really meaning to be intimidating, though he certainly came off as such. He frowned and couldn't help but think that the receptionist looked very familiar. Very, very, familiar. But he couldn't put his finger on it.
So instead of saying something, he just stood there and stared at the boy.
Lenna sighed one more as another five minutes passed by without event. She let her eyes wander once more around her environment and paused as she spotted an individual standing right in front of her.
"AH!" Lenna yelped as she was taken by surprise. She jumped out of her seat and rapidly spouted, "I'm sorry, sir! W-Welcome to the Museum of Contempt- no I mean Contemporary Art!"
Roderich took his eyes off the receptionist. He blinked at the greeting and shook his head softly.
"I'm the assistant curator," he said, extending an hand out. "Roderich Edelstein." He left out the fact that he was kind of the receptionist's boss, and not a customer.
Lenna flushed with embarassment as she mistook him for a visitor. "I'm so sorry!" She took his hand and shook it as firmly as she could. 'Oh, no, I can't believe I messed up already!'
Lenna paused. 'Roderich Edelstein? Where have I heard that name before?' She shook her head and decided that she wouldn't dwell on the matter.
"It hasn't been busy today... I'm Lenna Segur. It's very nice to meet you."

Roderich took back his hand with a frown. Lenna Segur rang a bell in his head but he couldn't remember anything. He just knew that it was a weird name for a boy.
He glanced around the empty place and gave a small nod. People just weren't interested in museums these days.
"Since you aren't doing anything," Roderich said, "I have a job for you."
He took out his wallet and pick out a twenty-dollar bill (the only small bill he had). He slid it on the desk and said, "Run to the bakery and get me a slice of chocolate mousse cake. Can you do that?"
"O-Of course!" Lenna picked up the bill on the desk and stood up, patting her skirt down to even out the wrinkles from sitting too long. "I'll be back as soon as possible!"
With that, she grabbed her purse from underneath the desk and hurried to the exit, hoping to catch a taxi in time. Lenna also hoped it wouldn't take too long, she was preparing dinner for two tonight.
Roderich gasped in surprise when the receptionist stood up. Was he wearing a skirt? The Austrian was an open-minded person, but he still couldn't stop himself from saying, "Please dress more appropriately next time."
He gasped again when he saw that Lenna had a purse. That pushed him over the edge. He frowned and studied the young receptionist. Suddenly, he came to the realization that Lenna.... was a girl.
"Excuse me," he said quickly, turning his head away in embarrassment. Now he felt bad for making a girl do his errand.
Lenna stilled in her tracks when she thought she heard Roderich say something but when she turned, he had already gone into his office. She blinked a few times before deciding that she was just hearing things, and she went along to get that slice of cake before the bakery closed.
Lenna walked out of the museum and waved for a taxi, which arrived in no time.
Roderich lingered behind in the museum. He headed toward his office but stopped before he even took a step. He turned around and hurried out the entrance. His upbringing and nature just didn't allow him to send a young girl off to do his errands.
He glanced around and spotted Lenna waving down a taxi and climbing in.
"W-wait!" he shouted, running toward the car. He almost slammed into the side of the car. So clumsy. "P-please... wait...!"
Austrians are confusingribbonlilyJuly 23 2009, 04:44:57 UTC
Lenna looked up in surprise just as Roderich came running out of the museum.
"Mr. Edelstein? Excuse me for a second," she told the taxi driver and climbed out of the vehicle. She looked quite worried as he was out of breath. "Are you alright?"
She wondered why he was in such a rush to get somewhere when he was completely fine before. To put it simply, she was very confused.
They are fragile creatures.notaustralianJuly 23 2009, 05:02:30 UTC
Roderich regained his composure. He adjusted his glasses and his cravat, trying to look less like a crazy bipolar maniac.
He looked down at the shorter Lenna and mentally slapped himself. Lenna was obviously a girl, how could he have made the mistake.
"Excuse me," he said quietly, "I haven't realized that you are... Nevermind."
He paused for a moment and thought of his next move, feeling like a jerk that he actually gave the poor girl money. How rude and inappropriate did that looked!

"I-Insult me?" Lenna digested his words for a while before realizing what had just occurred. Her face grew solemn, and she wondered when her 'curse' would ever end.
"Y-You thought I was a boy, didn't you?" She suddenly felt very tired and reach out her hand to Roderich to hand him back the bill. "Don't worry about it, Mr. Edelstein! It's not the first time it's happened..." She looked down at her watch and realized her shift was over.
Oh no, I'll have to go home to Vash like this again. "Have a good evening, Mr. Edelstein..." She turned to head back to the Charlestons. Maybe her day would be better tomorrow. After all, a new exhibit was waiting to open to the public. She might be able to look around before visitors came. Besides, the first day of work was never meant to be the greatest...
Hence Austrians have no friends? D:notaustralianJuly 23 2009, 05:38:34 UTC
"I... I apologize deeply," Roderich said, but he could sense that Lenna's feeling was hurt.
He lowered his head and winced when the the bill was handed back to him. He took it and gripped it in his hand. Gosh, what was the matter with him! He just didn't' know how to handle girls.
"I..." he stuttered, but Lenna was already walking away. He sighed and smacked himself mentally. He hesitated, fidgeting around the entrance like an idiot. Should he? Shouldn't he? Would he look like a psycho? But his gentleman calling told him to go...
"Lenna," he called, chasing after her. He kept his distance though, not wanting to make her more uncomfortable. "May I walk you home? If you don't' find me a nuisance, of course."

Roderich offered a soft smile, happy that Lenna wasn't finding him bothersome. He walked up next to her, still keeping an appropriate distance between them.
"Yes, a mistake is a mistake," he said, pushing up his glasses, "but I certainly hope it hasn't affected your opinion of me."
He looked down at Lenna. Up close, he was deadly sure that he did know her from somewhere. But where and how were beyond him. Perhaps, he had seen her around town before.
"Where do you live?" he asked casually. "If it's too far, we can ride a taxi."
Now that he had cooled down and thought about it, walking Lenna home was probably a bad idea. He wouldn't know how to get himself back afterward... seeing as how he had no sense of direction.
The subject and icon clash though.ribbonlilyJuly 23 2009, 13:51:11 UTC
"Oh, um, I live in the Charleston apartments, so it won't be too far from here." Lenn started to wonder if this was a good idea. Walking her home meant that they would meet up with Vash, and she wasn't terribly thrilled at the fact that her friend would possibly try to kill Roderich.
She felt a pang of nostalgia around the man and perhaps Vash could answer her questions about him. It was awkward to ask her friend about his time in Switzerland without good reason, but she now had one.
Lenna turned back to Roderich and smiled, "Thank you for the offer, but I think my roommate would misunderstand..." She wandered off, hoping he would get the hint that it wasn't because she thought badly of him, but because it wasn't exactly safe for him to walk her home.

Ah, if Vash was here, he'd probably be shooting Roderich to death right about now (no joke there...).
