It was common knowledge that a well-placed Avifors could turn any textbook into a bluebird. The talent did not lie just in the proper motion of the wand, the tight tone in the incantation, but also in differentiating between textbook and library books - as the latter was enchanted to avoid such Transfiguration spells. Once the textbooks were identified, their spines clad in though leather and golden letters, the next challenge was locating the first years. A moment taken to glance into their eyes reflected fear and admiration, their timid yet stupidly bold nature, and the way they carried their wands in fists clenched so tight, it was a matter of time before they would need magical tape.
He especially loved seeing the look of shock when their Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration sprouted black wings and took to the air. Potions books developed real spines, leathery skin, page-like fur, and scurried off into mouse holes.
Behind Ivan gleamed two of the giant hourglasses. His companion's distorted reflection wavered against the glass with the scarlet pebbles. When a the newly textbook-less first years clambered up the stairs after their mousy companions, a different face erupted from the crowd. "Well, look, Raivis, if it isn't Jones."
