The floor was slippery from wax and panic sweats of the previous students. The spotlight was hot - too hot on her, and Mei felt like she was going to faint from either nervousness or from the intense heat. But she battled on, swallowed the urge to vomit rushing up her throat, and smiled at her choir director and his secret after-class-teacher-lounge sex buddy.
"I'm Mei Li and I'll be singing I'm Not That Girl from the sensational Broadway musical, Wicked. Well, here goes!"
Mei closed her eyes as the music swelled through the speakers. For anyone who knew Mei well, it was obvious why she had chosen Elphaba's song to sing. After all, who else in Liberty, nay, who else in the world was bad with love as she was? As her soprano voice filled the auditorium, tears filled her eyes. Not that the professors would - should - be able to see them under the bright stage lights. Her lips quivered with overwhelming sadness and hopeless - would a girl like her ever find true love?
When her song was over, she lingered in her own personal world for a moment before she took a deep breath, teeth flashing brightly at the professors. She flipped her bangs out of the way and tugged loose strands behind her ear and peony barrette. The smile never once left her increasingly strained face, as if someone had injected an unhealthy amount of Botox in her, to give her a perpetual smile.
"And now, I'll be doing a monologue from the video game Fullmetal Alchemist: Bluebird's Illusion. I'm sure you probably don't know what that is, but it's an amazing video game, even though it's illegal, but I think you'll really find the endings super touching, I mean when Ed... Ahem, sorry. Okay, I'm ready."
"When Mom closed her eyes and let go of my hand," she said in a low voice, her gaze dropping to the waxed stage floor, "from that point, I felt the bluebird in my life had flown away forever, never to return..."
Mei paused and lifted her hand. A happy but hollow smile touched her lips as she let out a choked sigh.
"But... when I grasped Al's warm hand again and saw his gentle smile once more, I suddenly felt I was within the blue skies and saw a glimpse of the bluebird..."
She looked up to the ceiling. A brief happiness painted her expression.
"I have nothing more I can hope for... I just wish...I just wish we can always be like this -- wishing all this will never disappear."
She lowered her head and made deep eye-contact to the professors. Her eyes pleaded desperately.
"I only wish that the bluebird... won't be just another unattainable illusion."
Mei dipped to take a bow, signaling the end of her performance. She reused that irresistible, if not, creepy smile. She made sure to make eye-contact with both of the professors. "I hope you'll consider me! Thank you! Ja ne~"
She hurried down the stage, almost-totally-didn't slip off the small steps on her way. She rushed out of the auditorium and slid down against the wall. She was in serious need of a good sake to calm her nerves.
