Apparently Norwegians just give money for birthday gifts; i'm not just being lazy and uncreative. talks_to_nisse September 18 2010, 07:53:28 UTC
Sindre needed this. Time away from whatever Søren was becoming to him. Time away from Valdi's entanglement with the mafia. Time away from work and school and all other stressors. Time with a friend with whom he could simply relax.

Emi had met him at the university and drove the two of them to the beach for some much needed downtime. After locating a good spot, Sindre helped Emi unload her car and cart out food as well as set up the beach umbrella. He had taken the opportunity to change into his swim trunks after class let out, so all he had to do was shuck off his shirt and he was ready to enjoy the afternoon. Taking a seat on the towel, he moved his backpack closer to him and started to pull out a book.

Attention caught by Emi's question, Sindre stared out at the ocean while he deliberated. On the one hand, he loved the ocean, and it looked especially inviting today. On the other, he knew exactly how pale his skin was. Even with sunscreen, there was a limited amount of time he could be in the sun before he started to burn.

"I think I'm going to stay under the umbrella for a bit," he nodded towards the water. "But feel free to go in without me, if you want".

"Oh, I almost forgot," Sindre started, digging through his backpack. With a small noise of success, he drew out the envelope that contained Emi's birthday card and forty dollars, with a chocolate bar tied to it. "Happy birthday".

I'm sure it's part of Norwegian tradition. vnv salylimon September 19 2010, 02:29:35 UTC
"You sure?" Emi asked, raising an eyebrow before she spared the ocean another quick glance. "I can stay here, it's not problem. Maybe...I don't know, sunbathe. Or something." Though, really, that wasn't something she normally did. Lazing around was good and all, but why laze around when the ocean was right there? But leaving Sindre behind would make her feel just a bit guilty.

Maybe this should do this with a bigger group next time...

Blinking, she looked down at the envelope currently behind held in front of her before she grinned brightly at the blond. "Thank you, Sindre~" Emi all but cooed as she hugged him tightly before pulling away.

With a quick look at the bags she had brought along, she looked back up at her companion before tilting her head. "Well, have you eaten yet at least? I only had a small breakfast, really. So I don't mind eating and relaxing for a while."

It really, really is. talks_to_nisse September 19 2010, 04:47:43 UTC
Sindre returned the hug before considering Emi's proposal. He hadn't eaten...at all, he realized. His morning had been rather rushed; he'd have to ask Søren if he'd been messing with his alarm clock again. He was rather hungry, and Emi didn't seem too enthused to just sit in the sun.

Sindre caught her glancing wistfully at the water. No, Emi clearly wanted to go in the ocean. Sighing up at the sun, Sindre made a mental note to put on extra sunscreen before heading out. "We can go in after we eat," he offered. "I just burn easy".

Setting his book back down, he stood up to help Emi set up the food. "How have you been, lately? I haven't seen you around."

I totally believe you. vnv salylimon September 19 2010, 05:49:16 UTC
Smiling slightly, Emi nodded as she began to take the food out from their bags. "We'll have to wait a while before we go in. But we don't have to be out there long if you burn easily," She offered, tugging out the drinks she had packed before setting them down carefully beside them. Really, she could tell that this was more of a conflict of interests and, if Sindre was willing to compromise for her, Emi could readily do the same.

At his inquiry, she paused, considering the question briefly.

"I've...I've been better. Or, well, I've been having some pretty shitty days lately," Emi responded bluntly before shrugging. "But it's gotten better, I think. I mean, yesterday was really nice so here's to...here's to hoping it stays like that."

Nudging her bag away absently with her foot, she focused her attention back on the blond. "What about you?" Emi asked before settling down on top of the large towels they had placed down earlier.

Shrugging as he took some food, Sindre responded, "I'll be fine so long as I'm careful. I do like being in the ocean, don't worry." He could read anytime; this would likely be the last time this year the weather would be nice enough to come out.

He started to reach for a drink, but paused at Emi's response. "I'm sorry." Sindre was getting better at handling people on a personal basis, but comforting still wasn't his strong suit. "If you ever need anything, you know where I live."

Sindre took a long drink before daring to answer that. "Me? I've...been alright. Busy, mostly." Sindre lapsed quiet a few moments, then added, "Well, that's not true. I haven't been well. But I'm surviving." Understatement, to be sure. "Haven't been well" could cover the whole emotional mess with Søren, but it probably couldn't stretch to fit mafia dealings as well.

HOW ABOUT SOME FORESHADOWING. salylimon September 21 2010, 07:28:44 UTC
"You sure?" Emi asked once more, absently tucking back a stray strand of hair. "And don't worry about it, I...I can handle it," she lied, smiling slightly as she handed the blond a wrapped sandwich from her bag.

Toying idly with her own drink before stretching out her legs, she sighed and offered Sindre a small smile. "Like you said, I'm here if you ever need to talk. Or complain - both are fine by me." Emi said, carefully unwrapping her own sandwich as she spoke. Pausing briefly at the nearby sounds of annoyingly loud seagulls, she passed him a few napkins before continuing. "But...it's not too horrible for you right now, is it?"
