The ride to Berwald's had been tense. Søren had seemed excited when Sindre showed up at his door, but once Sindre didn't answer his questions he had quieted. Sindre was glad for that. He didn't want to have to explain the situation twice, and he didn't necessarily want Søren to know where they were going ahead of time. It might have been selfish of him, but Sindre needed both Berwald and Søren right now, despite what the two thought of each other ( ... )

Something about the house unnerved him. Maybe it was the way everything seemed so perfectly cared for. The grass in the lawn was so even that it practically bespoke of someone on hands and knees with a level and pair of scissors carefully clipping away. The shutters were painted flawlessly.

It was very meticulous, unnatural (reminded him of the Stepford Wives, in all honesty), and told Søren right away that whoever lived here was probably not going to find themselves on his good side.

...not that Sindre's words reassured him in the slightest.

"Sindre, seriously..." he said, beginning to reach out to take Sindre by the wrist, "What the hell is goin' on-"

Then the door opened and he found himself staring Berwald Oxenstierna in the eye.

Metaphorical hackles raised, his hand shot back to his side as if he'd been stung and he'd had to bite the inside of his cheek until a coppery taste filled his mouth to keep from saying Something He'd Regret Later. God DAMN it ( ... )

Funny you should say that... oxenstierna_b September 28 2010, 17:04:43 UTC
The last few weeks had been a stressful time for Berwald, what with Tino's strange behaviour on top of the usual problems of life...and the house showed it. Unlike some people, when Berwald was stressed he had to find something to do, to stop himself from dwelling on things. If he could fall into a bed dead tired, he didn't need to worry about disquiting dreams of empty houses. Usually ( ... )

Deliberately meeting Berwald's eyes, Sindre nodded. He hadn't missed Søren's glare or Berwald's wariness. "Thanks for letting us come," he said, forcing a pleasant tone. The other two should follow his lead, at least for the moment ( ... )

He was Irritated. It was a severe understatement, but making the situation seem less than it was kept his temper a bit more firmly in hand. A strange feeling of what felt similar to bubbling anxiety flooded his limbs, making them feel light and shaky as he brushed carefully past Berwald to follow Sindre, eyes staring straight ahead and at nothing in particular as he stood behind the sofa, refusing to take a seat just yet ( ... )

Berwald kept giving Søren careful, narrow eyed looks as he stepped in. Søren wasn't looking back, to the point Berwald got the feeling he was purposefully avoiding looking at him. Søren's mouth was set into a straight line. Such a contrast to how he'd usually been, back when they were...friends, or whatever they'd been. As far as Berwald recalled Søren tended to smile even when he was annoyed...he only went serious when he was really really mad, and sometimes not even then ( ... )

Deliberately ignoring the tension between the two, Sindre stared between them as he began speaking.

"The short version is, when Valdi went looking for a place to purchase a puffin, he bought it from the first one he found. Essentially, he bought it from the mafia.

I'm not sure how he crossed paths with the mafia. He doesn't know that I'm aware of his situation, and I'd rather he not know until it's dealt with.

He owes them a fair amount of money just for the bird. If you add the interest they're expecting, it comes to considerably more, especially for a college student. And he's not paying it back fast enough for their liking."

He paused for a moment, swallowing, and then very carefully didn't look directly at either. "That's why I need your help."

Berwald listened, his frown deepening as Sindre went on with his terse account. Mafia? They were really working here, in Liberty? Berwald was surprised, but didn't voice it, not wanting to interrupt Sindre. Besides, if he said so, then it must be true, unless it was a very elaborate story from Sindre's younger brother. He hadn't seemed like the type to lie like that, but then Berwald didn't know him very well.

But...he didn't really suspect it strongly enough to argue about it with Sindre. Valdi was his younger brother, after all, and if Sindre believed him Berwald had no business questioning him. Did he? No, better not.

"What sort'f hep?," Berwald asked instead.
