"Hello?"
"Hello, Michelle?"
"I'm sorry no Michelle lives here."
"Shannan?"
"No, this is Lyndsey. Who is this?"
"This is your uncle Keven. Wheres your mom?"
"Shes right here why? ..but she's asleep."
"Its an emergency."
"An emergency? What happend? You okay? Whats wrong?"
"Let me speak to your mother.
"Um.. Okay. One sec..Mom... Mom.. wake up. Phone is for you."
I handed her the phone and she started to talk. Then asked me to go get her phone/address book. Mom fussed on the phone with him for nearly 10 minutes before he finally told her why he needed phone numbers.
"What? Grandma? Your fucking with me! Grandma??" Moms voice instantly solemn.
I was sitting there watching her, clueless as to what he was telling her.
All I knew is that he sounded calm, and collected when I picked up the receiver. He hadn't shown any tinge of mourning, sadness, or anything.
She turned the phone off, then looked at me, only to look away as soon as she had met my eyes.
"He said Grandma is dead." I looked at her as if she had just spoken Greek. Her eyes blank looking at the floor.
"Ma! What? No! He's lying. He wasn't even sad. He's gotta be pulling one over on us. It can't be true." My eyes were all ready welling up, I couldn't hold them back. If it had been a joke, it was a shitty idea of one.
"No, I think he was telling the truth. Said she had a heart attack." The last part came out in a studder as she started to shake. "Why?"
I started to pace. Thinking out loud "But, they just sent her home from the hospital. Said her heart was fine. It can't be true."
I curled up next to mom on her bed, and we cried for what seemed like hours, waiting for some relief to come.
Finally a call from my aunt Robyn came, (keven's sister) and she said she was on her way over, and asked us to get dressed.
The next 4 hours were spent at another aunts house, where we tried to figure out funeral arrangements. Even though nothing was decided.
Lots of crying.
We got home around 3:30pm only knowing a bit more than what we'd heard before. It wasn't a heard attack. It was a blood clot, in her lungs that had killed her.
She'd suffocated.
I'm going to drive my mom over to Pendleton Oregon (eastern Oregon) tomorrow, to pick up my Uncle Allen, (if you're wondering, she was my great grandmother. My mom and I lived with her, or next door to her most of my life.)then drive an extra few hours to Yakima Washington to spend the remainder of the week with my grandpa (my grandma's new husband of 3 years).
The family has decided on the funeral being on Friday. Then after that, My mom and I will be driving the body to Montana to the burial plot.
*sigh* Like I said in my previous post. I won't be arround.
We'll be back by tuesday at the latest. (the 16th)
Until then.
