tastinglyBackground:
Mike grew up in a rather relaxed family. Derek and Charlotte Way, his parents, raised him to be polite and to listen to others when the spoke. They were supplied with a good amount of money, and kept Mike as happy as they could. Not to say that Mike always obeyed his parents' wishes, no, he was a rambunctious child. Around fourteen years old, he began to take most of his energy out on Arietta, his little sister, who was 8 at the time. He would poke and tease her, stealing her dolls and hiding them behind the furnace or burning them. When Arietta found them, she would have a small fit, often hitting Mike over the head with the remains of her dolls. He wouldn't ever raise a finger to her, though, he would take the punishment she dealt out. Arietta started to call him 'Mickey' in order to get him back for all of the teasing that he did to her. In turn, he called her Ari.
Things were not going so well in the Way family after Mike turned sixteen. He was worrying about high school, while his parents were often left staying up late at night, talking about things that Mike could only hear murmurs of from his room. They never used to speak in such hushed tones at night, they were always open about what was going on in the family, but things were different now. His father, Derek, began to drink heavily shortly after the late night talks. Mike knew something was going on, but he decided to leave it untouched, occasionally exchanging suspicions with Arietta. Arietta was oblivious to the changes happening in their family, denying their parents' unhappiness and insisting that Mike was wrong about what was going on. "They're just having some nice time alone", she would say. Sadly, Mike's sister was wrong. They were contemplating a divorce, and the only thing that was holding them back was their children. Mike tried to interrupt one of their talks one night, but quickly got shooed away and accused of lashing out for attention. It wasn't completely wrong of them to accuse him of such -- Mike used to do things around the house to get attention, spouting lies or being a little louder than he should be. But that was then, and this was now. He was right about the divorce, and he did everything in his power to try and convince them to stay together. Mike failed miserably, his involvement in the matter only seemed to make things worse. His parents got divorced, and Arietta held Mike responsible for it, telling him that if he hadn't intervened they would have been a happy family.
He felt left out after that, his mother becoming introverted and Arietta refused to let herself be any closer to Mike than she already was. Mike began to lash out at school, ignoring his homework and lingering around a bad crowd of kids. He didn't experiment with drugs, but he was definitely contemplating it as he became more separated from his family. Charlotte tried to keep things together, forcing her kids to have meals together at the table to try and build the same sort of relationship they all had with each other once again, but that didn't do much. Mike was beginning to talk less and less, spending more time out of the house or in his room. At school, all he did was watch people when they spoke. His bad attitude began depleting when he reached his senior year at high school, but teachers began to get concerned about him, and not because of his grades. He seemed disconnected from most things, never touching his emotions when asked about them, and he didn't want to see a counselor about it what was going on at home. He was obviously troubled, but no one knew what it was that was troubling him. Charlotte seemed to know, but she was just as upset about the divorce as Mike was, and only talked about it with her psychiatrist, who she would see once a week on Thursday afternoons, usually after school hours, which left Mike and Arietta at home alone. Mike didn't mind being alone, but Arietta was starting a dangerous curiosity with boys at age fourteen. They were both beautiful siblings, but Mike was left uninterested in relationships, going for small, short-lived ones instead, simply because he didn't want to get close to people. He began to feel protective of his little sister when she started bringing boys home, being sure to check on them every so often, even though Arietta would yell at him for it, demanding privacy. It was only in those moments where she would revert back to calling him Mike instead of Mickey. Mike would let it roll of his shoulders, feeling indifferent about her insults either way.
Around the time Mike was twenty, his father visited the house with friend, John LeBeau, and his son, Riley, who was the same age as Mike. Riley was interested in law and criminal justice, and was, surprisingly, not bothered by Mike's quiet demeanor. The two boys became friends easily and Mike enjoyed listening to Riley's stories of how much he had been studying to get accepted to Harvard University early. He had been a 'child protegee' according to his father. Mike was partially interested in the subject, but he was too busy dealing with his family and school life to pay much attention to it. Riley and Mike kept in touch for the next few years, Riley having happily called him when he had gotten accepted into Harvard. The two kept in touch for the next few years, but lost touch once Riley got a job with the MAPD and was transferred to the LAPD without much hesitance after a few successful years of work. Mike spent a few years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst before taking a break from school. He had made a few, but not notable, friends, and had been dragged into a few parties. Yes, dragged. He was some-what compliant when accompanying a friend to one of the parties, being interested in the body language and different actions people would be expressing, but mostly because there was a girl he had taken an interest in that he knew was going. The girl's name was Nichole, and she had only talked to Mike once. He managed to get her alone, but he didn't want a one-night stand, he wanted to provide her with what she wanted. Nichole wasn't interested in any sort of relationship, but she offered to help teach him how to treat a girl for the next month. Mike was reluctant at her offer, but agreed -- he didn't have much experience with girls besides the occasional kiss or short but sweet hook up in high school, and he didn't know how much this kind of relationship would affect him.

When Mike turned twenty-eight, he received an unexpected call from Riley. He was under a great deal amount of pressure and needed some help with a specific case that involved a few missing children. Mike agreed after Riley convinced him that the pay he would get for his help would be good.
