I'm sitting in my office waiting for the disaster to start. We're doing the mock-disaster drill at school. The nursing students are playing the parts of the staff nurses, patients and family members while faculty are playing the parts of administrators, physicians and nursing supervisors. We have the nursing labs set up as hospital units and triage centers. The break area is the family waiting room. The Dean's office is the morgue.
I'm the medical director and physician. I'm walking around with my cane - I've already been called Dr. House twice.
In about 15 minutes a van carrying a group of tourists is going to have a horrendous roll-over accident and we'll be getting victims...I'm waiting for the airhorn to blow that announces the simulation has begun. I have a cup of double-strength coffee and a doughnut.
Life just doesn't get much better than this, you know?
