I do wonder what this all means. Clegg getting conscious that he is too close to Cameron?

Nick is glad everyone heard.

It's sick, it's thick, it's stupid that he's become half of something he hates. It's an abusive marriage in expensive suits, two hands wrapped around waists and throats - the harder David squeezes the more Nick has to pretend he enjoys it.

He hates this. Hates what the coalition has become. Nick thought - back in May - this could be a force for good.

A force for good

What a stupid dream.

Liberal Democrats have always been dreamers, it's their downfall. Nick thought he had avoided all the traps, agreeing to a coalition where neither Charlie nor Ming would have taken the risk...

Maybe he was just too desperate to prove himself ( ... )

Yay, a nice healthy dose of Lib Dem bitterness. I can only stand Nick when he is brimming with suppressed regret and hatred and rage, and this delivered beautifully.

Will something happen to let Nick stand up and finally walk straight through into the no door?

We're praying right alongside you, Nicky. I hope you have your moment of truth and discover you have some balls, and I hope it comes at the most awkward, embarrassing possible instant for Cameron. >:D

There has to be a point where Nick says no. Has to be a point where the party comes first. But Nick doesn't know what that point will be.

Very elegantly written fic! Distilled bitterness and beautiful phrasing. <33

No matter what one's politics, one has to appreciate the difficult position Nick and the Liberal Democrats have put themselves in. I wonder if we ever really will get that moment of the "no door", or whether their party will fade away without ever (because of never?) having stood up?
