The Chancellor & the PM both have official residences in Downing Street. I believe they are the only two that do. While the PM's office etc is in Downing Street. The Chancellor works in the Treasury (beautiful on the outside - soulless on the inside, completely modernised - white minimalism ick). The PM usually lives in the flat above no. 10 but the last few PMs have had young children and have taken the larger No. 11 flat.
The Deputy PM has an office in the Cabinet Office. There is an internal passageway/corridor from Downing Street to the Cabinet Office which is adjacent on Whitehall.
Downing Street is gated at both ends, the gates are manned by police/security. You need a pass with the correct level of clearance to get in. Press would require passes.
All Whitehall buildings have security guards, cctv, passes for entry etc.
Whitehall has the largest amount of cctv in the world. There are literally thousands of security cameras. Considering how small the area is, it's quite disturbing.
The PM and certain other ministers are guarded by the Met Specialist protection branch. There's also a VIP protection branch and a royal protection branch. MI5 and MI6 are not involved in the day to day protection. They may be able to advise, warn of threats but they have a difficult - shall we say - relationship with politicians.
