14 - the days I live without you

I'm so very sorry for the lateness of the new post. But this is the first time LJ is working for me again.  I wrote a sonnet for you but is now forever lost in the glitches :(
So no funny business here, I know you want to get back to the usual game ASAP.

There is a substitute on dreamwidth in case LJ is having trouble again.

The usual things:

David considers his next move for awhile, pondering whether or not he'll upset the fragile balance of this household no matter what he does. Not to mention sorting out what to actually do.

He can't sleep one night and winds up still awake at the point the door swings open and Tony slinks in from the night. Perhaps it's fate. So, after all that, David takes Gordon's advice after all.

As quietly as possible, he extracts himself from the bed and makes his way to the doorframe. "Good evening."

Tony looks knackered, but grins at him anyway. Tony does have that way of constantly looking thrilled to see you, which makes David think of memories he's really better off avoiding. "Hello. What are you doing up?"

"Couldn't sleep I'm afraid," he says, moving closer to Tony for fear of waking the others.

"Usually when someone's waiting up for me it means an argument," says Tony. "I must say I much prefer this version."

"What makes you think I don't want to argue with you?"

"Call it a hunch."

David's vaguely annoyed. Tony peers round his shoulder into the bedroom, frowning slightly.

"How's Gordon?"

"...Same as ever, really."

"Ah." Tony grimaces. "You know, he wasn't always like this."

"I'll take your word for it." David's not entirely sure what 'this' is, but it's probably irrelevant. "Look, Tony, there was something I wanted to ask you about."

"Hmm?"

"You and Gordon have mentioned the name a few times, and I was just curious--"

"You want to know about Peter?"

David blinks. "Well... yes."

Tony plasters on his grin again. "An old friend of mine and Gordon's, that's all. We came down here from Scotland -- couple of boys trying to make it in the city, didn't really work out -- and he was one of the first people we met. We weren't, uh, quite as bad off then as we are now. Anyway the three of us just about managed to eke out an existence for awhile. As things got more desperate Peter and I decided to put certain natural talents to good use. Talents it must be said, Gordon wasn't really in possession of. I think I was a more valuable commodity than Peter, to be frank."

That sentence makes David uncomfortable, but then again, what experience does he have in this? What right does he have to judge?

"So what happened to him?" he asks.

Tony pauses. "Oh, he got an actual job offer." He waves his hand dismissively. "I would have liked to stay in touch but, well, it is what it is. Nothing you can do."

David feels like there's something else, something missing from this story, just by the way Tony's jaw twitches. But somehow all his questions die in his mouth.

Tony sighs and peers round him again, and David would almost get annoyed but he can't help but feel a little sympathetic. "He really wasn't," Tony says, small and whining. David's confused. "He was my best friend. I loved him so much, and then everything... But I loved him. I did, I did, I promise!"

Tony looks like he's about to cry and David is very awkward. He's not even certain who Tony's talking about now. "Tony..." He stretches out a hand to gently lay on the man's shoulder, expecting him to pull away.

He doesn't. He pauses a second, then laughs. "Sorry!" he says, wiping his eyes. "Sorry, sometimes I just -- I must have terrified you, musn't I? Me and my emotional problems."

David can only blink. Well that was quick. "Are you alright?" he asks, both out of genuine concern and as a more polite form of what the hell is going on here?

Tony shrugs. "Ah, the world is what it is. Nothing appears to have changed, at least not on this particular day." He chuckles away to himself. "I must admit, it's nice that you worry."

"...You're welcome," says David. "Is that sentence some sort of hidden call for help, a hint that I should keep prying, however awkward?"

Tony laughs. "Aww, your prying is sweet. But thank you, I can probably look after myself. Trust me."

And he probably shouldn't given how strange this conversation has been, but damn it, he does trust Tony. After all, it was Tony who gave him a place to stay -- mostly by just refusing to hear any objections, but still. David has his faults, but he's not an ingrate. Even if he's a little overwhelming sometimes, Tony won him, fair and square.

"If you're certain," he says. "Just -- if I could help, I would like to."

Tony cocks his head to the side and gives him an odd look. "Dear boy," he says, which doesn't sound like him, sounds more like Margaret. Then he leans across and, very gently, presses a kiss to David's forehead. David blinks again, nonplussed. Tony pulls back with a grin, then yawns.

"I really ought to go to bed, I'm exhausted," he says. "Are you coming?"

"Hmm? Oh. Yeah."

And despite how utterly perplexed he is, he sleeps better.
